A '''pallavi''' is a [refrain](/source/refrain) in [carnatic music](/source/carnatic_music), commonly associated with South India. It is the first part of any formal composition ([Krithi](/source/Krithi)) which has three segments – Pallavi, Anupallavi and Charanam (which can be one or more). Pallavi is usually also an abbreviation of [Ragam Thanam Pallavi](/source/Ragam_Thanam_Pallavi). It is considered as the opening verse of Varnam.<ref>{{cite web |title=Varnam in Carnatic Music |url=https://musikclass.com/content/varnam-in-carnatic-music/ |website=Musikclass |publisher=Musikclass |access-date=21 June 2023}}</ref>
