**Palestine Square** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): ميدان فلسطين, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Arabic): *Mīdān Falastīn*), also known as **Al-Saha** or **As-Saha** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): الساحة, "the (community) space" or "the square"),[1] is a city square in east-central [Gaza City](/source/Gaza_City), [Palestine](/source/Palestine), in between [Jamal Abdel Nasser Street](/source/Jamal_Abdel_Nasser_Street) and [Omar Mukhtar Street](/source/Omar_Mukhtar_Street). It is the location of a bus station, a taxi station, a fruit market, the [Al-Ahli Arab Hospital](/source/Al-Ahli_Arab_Hospital), and dozens of small shops and vendors. Gaza's municipal headquarters is also located in the square. Palestine Square once was walled when it laid along the southern edge of the [Old City](/source/Old_City_of_Gaza), overlooking barley and vegetable farms, olive and almond groves.[2]

## History

During the construction of a shopping centre in 2016 the remnants of a Byzantine church were discovered.[3]

### Gaza war

On December 7, 2023, during the fighting in the [Gaza war](/source/Gaza_war), the [Israeli Defense Forces](/source/Israeli_Defense_Forces) conquered Palestine Square. On November 30, 2023, a week prior to the occupation, [Hamas](/source/Hamas) used Palestine Square as the venue for the [release of some of the hostages](/source/2023_exchange_of_Israeli_hostages_for_Palestinian_prisoners) it was holding.[4][*[dubious](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Accuracy_dispute#Disputed_statement) – [discuss](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Palestine_Square#Multiple_Palestine_Squares_within_Gaza?)*]

On January 25, 2025, Hamas used the square to stage the release of four Israeli female soldiers held as hostage since October 7, 2023. It was the second round of hostage release as spelled out in the [2025 ceasefire deal](/source/January_2025_Gaza_war_ceasefire) between Hamas and [Israel](/source/Israel).[5]
