}}The '''Pala group''' (also known as Pale di San Martino) is the largest [massif](/source/massif) of the [Dolomites](/source/Dolomites), with about 240&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup> of surface, located between eastern [Trentino](/source/Trentino) and [Veneto](/source/Veneto) ([province of Belluno](/source/province_of_Belluno)), in the area between [Primiero](/source/Primiero) (valleys of [Cismon](/source/Cismon), Canali, Travignolo), Valle del Biois ([Falcade](/source/Falcade), [Canale d'Agordo](/source/Canale_d'Agordo)) and Agordino.

In the central sector of the group, discovered by the Marquis [Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu](/source/D%C3%A9odat_Gratet_de_Dolomieu) in 1788, consisting of [dolomite](/source/Dolomite_(mineral)), a [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) formed by double [calcium carbonate](/source/calcium_carbonate)  and [magnesium](/source/magnesium), extends the plateau, on an area of about 50&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>, forming a huge empty space, rocky and almost lunar that fluctuates between 2500 and 2800 m above [sea level](/source/sea_level).

The part of the group extended in Trentino is entirely included in the [Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park](/source/Paneveggio-Pale_di_San_Martino_Natural_Park). According to some sources, the group inspired the Belluno writer [Dino Buzzati](/source/Dino_Buzzati) (a great lover of the chain) in the setting of his novel "[The Tartar Steppe](/source/The_Tartar_Steppe)".
