# Pakize Tarzi

**Pakize İzzet Tarzi** (1910 – 10 October 2004) was a Turkish physician. She is renowned for being the first female [gynecologist](/source/Gynecologist) in the [Republic of Turkey](/source/Republic_of_Turkey).[1]

## Early life

Tarzi was born in [Ottoman](/source/Ottoman_Empire) [Aleppo](/source/Aleppo) in 1910.[2] Her father was the [Inspectorates-General](/source/Inspectorates-General_(Turkey)) of the [Ziraat Bankası](/source/Ziraat_Bankas%C4%B1) in [Aleppo](/source/Aleppo). The family moved to [Adana](/source/Adana) once the British [captured Damascus](/source/Capture_of_Damascus_(1918)) in 1918, and then to [Konya](/source/Konya) once the French took control of Adana. She studied her secondary education at the Sörler Okulu and then decided to pursue a career as a doctor during her studies at the Bursa American Girls College. She finished her studies in Medicine in 1932.[2]

On 21 July 1949, she opened the first women's clinic, the "Pakize İ. Tarzi Kliniği", in [Şişli](/source/%C5%9Ei%C5%9Fli) district of [Istanbul](/source/Istanbul), [Turkey](/source/Turkey).[2]

She is also known as the very first Turkish woman, who swam across the [Bosphorous](/source/Bosphorous) in the 1930s.[3]

## Personal life

In 1935, she married Fettah Tarzi, who was the nephew of [Soraya Tarzi](/source/Soraya_Tarzi), wife of the [Afghan](/source/Afghanistan) King [Amanullah Khan](/source/Amanullah_Khan).[2] They had two daughters, Fatma and Zeynep, and a son, Mahmut. Zeynep Tarzi was the second wife of the Imperial [Ottoman](/source/Ottoman_Empire) Prince [Ertuğrul Osman](/source/Ertu%C4%9Frul_Osman).[4]

Tarzi died at the age of 94.[2]
