Ancient Athenian deme

**Paeonidae** or **Paionidai** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Παιονίδαι),[1] was a [deme](/source/Deme) of [ancient Attica](/source/Ancient_Attica), associated with the tribe (*[phyle](/source/Phyle)*) [Leontis](/source/Leontis).[2] It was apparently the same as the **Paeonia** or **Paionia** (Παιονίη), which Herodotus located as being below the Attic fortress of [Leipsydrium](/source/Leipsydrium).[3] The site of Paeonidae is located north of modern [Acharnes](/source/Acharnes) (formerly Menidi) at the foot of [Mount Parnes](/source/Mount_Parnes).[4]

According to the second-century geographer [Pausanias](/source/Pausanias_(geographer)), the Paeonidae were supposed to have been named after [Paeon](/source/Paeon_(son_of_Antilochus)), the son of [Antilochus](/source/Antilochus), who was the son of [Nestor](/source/Nestor_(mythology)), and one of the [suitors of Helen](/source/Suitors_of_Helen), who fought in the [Trojan War](/source/Trojan_War).[5]
