==Club career==

Born and raised in [Midleton](/source/Midleton), [County Cork](/source/County_Cork), FitzGerald first played hurling as a schoolboy with [Midleton CBS Secondary School](/source/Midleton_CBS_Secondary_School). He progressed through the juvenile and underage ranks with the [Midleton](/source/Midleton_GAA) club before eventually joining the club's intermediate team.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.midletongaa.com/corkrepresentatives|title=Cork representatives|publisher=Midleton GAA website|date=|accessdate=27 June 2022}}</ref> FitzGerald was part of the Midleton team that won the [1962 Cork IHC](/source/1962_Cork_Intermediate_Hurling_Championship) title after a defeat of [Cobh](/source/Cobh_GAA). His performances for Midleton also earned a call-up to divisional side [Imokilly](/source/Imokilly_GAA) and he was a member of the team that was beaten by [St Finbarr's](/source/St._Finbarr's_GAA) in the [1968 final](/source/Cork_Senior_Hurling_Championship).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://homepage.eircom.net/~kod/senior_hurling_2.htm|title=Senior Hurling Finals 1920 - 1969|publisher=Cork GAA records website|date=|accessdate=27 June 2022}}</ref>

==Inter-county career==

FitzGerald first played at inter-county level as a member of the [Cork minor hurling team](/source/Cork_GAA). His two-year association with the team ended with consecutive defeats by [Tipperary](/source/Tipperary_GAA). FitzGerald's progression onto the [Cork senior hurling team](/source/Cork_senior_hurling_team) was instant and he made his debut against [Dublin](/source/Dublin_GAA) in the [1957-58 National League](/source/1957-58_National_Hurling_League). He made his first championship appearance in a game against Tipperary later that season.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://sportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/7/SHC%201950-1959.pdf|title=Cork SHC teams: 1950-1959|publisher=Cork GAA website|date=|access-date=12 March 2013|first=|last=}}</ref>

After being dropped from the Cork senior team in 1960, FitzGerald was later drafted onto the [intermediate team](/source/All-Ireland_Intermediate_Hurling_Championship) for their unsuccessful [1961 championship](/source/1961_All-Ireland_Intermediate_Hurling_Championship) campaign.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://sportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/galleries/7_uploaded/1%20CORK%20INTERMEDIATE%20HURLING%20CHAMPIONSHIP%20TEAMS.pdf|title=Cork intermediate hurling teams: 1961-2009|publisher=Cork GAA website|date=|access-date=12 March 2013|first=|last=}}</ref> His performances in this grade earned a recall to the senior team in 1962 and he was a regular member of the starting fifteen in the years that followed.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://sportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/7/SHC%201960-1969.pdf|title=Cork SHC teams: 1960-1969|publisher=Cork GAA website|date=|access-date=12 March 2013|first=|last=}}</ref> FitzGerald was at left wing-back on the Cork team that beat [Kilkenny](/source/Kilkenny_GAA) in the [1966 All-Ireland final](/source/1966_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship_Final), having earlier won a [Munster Championship](/source/Munster_Senior_Hurling_Championship) medal.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-10064119.html|title=‘The scent of victory was in the air at half-time’|publisher=Irish Examiner|date=8 September 2004|access-date=12 March 2022|first=|last=}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-20419245.html|title=The mission accomplished to end Cork famine in 1966|publisher=Irish Examiner|date=3 September 2016|access-date=12 March 2022|first=|last=}}</ref> He played his last game for the Cork senior team in 1968, however, he returned to inter-county activity with the intermediate team in 1970.

==Inter-provincial career==

FitzGerald's performances at inter-county level resulted in his selection for [Munster](/source/Munster_GAA) in their [1964 Railway Cup final](/source/1964_Railway_Cup_Hurling_Championship) defeat by [Leinster](/source/Leinster_GAA). It was the first of four successive appearances in finals with the inter-provincial team, with FitzGerald claiming a winners' medal after a defeat of Leinster in [1966](/source/1966_Railway_Cup_Hurling_Championship).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://munster.gaa.ie/history/railway-cup-hurling/|title=Railway Cup Hurling|publisher=Munster GAA website|date=|access-date=12 March 2022|first=|last=}}</ref>

==Coaching career==

FitzGerald's first major role in management came when he was appointed as a selector with the [Cork senior hurling team](/source/Cork_senior_hurling_team) in September 1974. He was part of the selection committee the following year that helped secure the [Munster Championship](/source/Munster_Senior_Hurling_Championship) title before later losing to [Galway](/source/Galway_GAA) in the [1975 All-Ireland semi-final](/source/1975_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship).

FitzGerald spent a long number of years over a period of three decades as coach and trainer with [Midleton](/source/Midleton_GAA). He enjoyed his first success at club level when Midleton won the [1978 Cork IHC](/source/1978_Cork_Intermediate_Hurling_Championship) title. After a brief time away from the team, FitzGerald returned to guide Midleton through the most successful period in their history.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.echolive.ie/corksport/arid-40226549.html|title=Ger Fitzgerald knows Midleton hurlers must deliver this season|publisher=Echo Live|date=14 February 2021|access-date=12 March 2022|first=|last=}}</ref> Midleton, under FitzGerald, won three [Cork SHC](/source/Cork_Senior_Hurling_Championship) titles between 1986 and 1991, however, the high point of his tenure in charge was the securing of the [All-Ireland Club Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Club_Hurling_Championship) title in [1988](/source/1987-88_All-Ireland_Senior_Club_Hurling_Championship).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.the42.ie/peter-smith-midleton-1159074-Nov2013/|title=Former player Smith guides Midleton to Cork hurling title|publisher=The 42|date=4 November 2013|access-date=12 March 2022|first=|last=}}</ref>
