The **PRC Subdivision** is a [railway](/source/Railway) line owned and operated by the [Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad](/source/Rapid_City,_Pierre_and_Eastern_Railroad) (RCPE), a subsidiary of [Genesee & Wyoming](/source/Genesee_%26_Wyoming). The line is the company's important east–west route, connecting [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota) to [Rapid City](/source/Rapid_City,_South_Dakota), both in [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota). The line is a freight-only line, stretching for approximately 170 miles (270 km) across central [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota). It uses the [Chicago and North Western Railroad Bridge](/source/Chicago_and_North_Western_Railroad_Bridge) to cross the [Missouri River](/source/Missouri_River) between Pierre and Fort Pierre.

The route is not equipped with [centralized traffic control](/source/Centralized_traffic_control) or [automatic block signalling](/source/Automatic_block_signalling) systems. Traffic is controlled via radio under [track warrant control](/source/Track_warrant_control) rules.

In addition to [freight yards](/source/Rail_yard) located at [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota) and [Rapid City](/source/Rapid_City,_South_Dakota), there are [passing sidings](/source/Passing_loop) at [Philip](/source/Philip,_South_Dakota) and [Wall](/source/Wall,_South_Dakota). Formerly, there was also a wye at Wall. There is also a 6,000-foot (1,800-metre) long passing siding named J.C. Siding 25 miles (40 km) west from [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota). At other locations only spur tracks exist.

## Connections

The PRC Subdivision connects with [Pierre Subdivision](/source/Pierre_Subdivision) at [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota) and with [Black Hills Subdivision](/source/Black_Hills_Subdivision) at [Rapid City](/source/Rapid_City,_South_Dakota). There was also a spur track connection to [Ellsworth Air Force Base](/source/Ellsworth_Air_Force_Base) at [Box Elder](/source/Box_Elder,_South_Dakota). This connection is not active as it was closed off in 2004 by the U.S. Air Force.[citation needed]

There are no connections to other rail traffic operators along this line.
