# Oxenhall

**Oxenhall** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) 10 miles (16 km) north west of [Gloucester](/source/Gloucester),[1] in the [Forest of Dean](/source/Forest_of_Dean_District) district, in the county of [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire), England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 243.[2] The parish touches [Dymock](/source/Dymock), [Gorsley and Kilcot](/source/Gorsley_and_Kilcot), [Kempley](/source/Kempley), [Newent](/source/Newent) and [Upton Bishop](/source/Upton_Bishop).[3] Oxenhall has a [parish meeting](/source/Parish_meeting).[4]

## History

The name "Oxenhall" means 'Nook of land where oxen are kept'.[8] Oxenhall was recorded in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) as *Horsenehal*.[9] On 25 March 1883 a detached part of [Pauntley](/source/Pauntley) parish was transferred to Oxenhall.[10][11]
