**Owermoigne** ([/ˌoʊ.ərˈmɔɪn/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) [*OH-ər-MOYN*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key)) is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parishes_in_England) in the [county](/source/English_county) of [Dorset](/source/Dorset) in southern [England](/source/England), situated 6 miles (9.7 km) south-east of [Dorchester](/source/Dorchester%2C_Dorset). In the [2011 census](/source/United_Kingdom_Census_2011) the parish had a population of 467.[1] The parish is within an [electoral ward](/source/Electoral_ward) with the same name, which stretches from the east side of the small coastal village of [Ringstead](/source/Ringstead%2C_Dorset) north towards Owermoigne and then up to, but not including, [Crossways](/source/Crossways%2C_Dorset). To the east it covers [White Nothe](/source/White_Nothe), Holworth and Galton. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 3,804.[2]

The parish was formerly part of the [hundred of Winfrith](/source/Winfrith_(hundred)), and subsequently constituted a [liberty](/source/Liberty_(division)) by itself.

Owermoigne village is described as Nether Moynton in the fictional [Wessex](/source/Thomas_Hardy's_Wessex) of [Thomas Hardy](/source/Thomas_Hardy)'s novels[3] and his short story *The Distracted Preacher* in [Wessex Tales](/source/Wessex_Tales) takes place in the village.

At Holworth is a small wooden church dedicated to [St Catherine-by-the-Sea](/source/St_Catherine-by-the-Sea%2C_Holworth) above [Burning Cliff](/source/Burning_Cliff).
