# Otukou

**Otukou** ([Māori](/source/M%C4%81ori_language): *Ōtukou*) is a rural community in the [Taupō District](/source/Taup%C5%8D_District) and [Waikato](/source/Waikato) region of New Zealand's [North Island](/source/North_Island).[1]

The main Otukou settlement is located on [State Highway 46](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_46), on the south-eastern shore of [Lake Rotoaira](/source/Lake_Rotoaira).[1]

Okahukura Bush lies to the south,[2] at the north end of the [Tongariro Crossing](/source/Tongariro_Alpine_Crossing).[3]

## Marae

Otūkou Marae, located west of the lake, is a [meeting place](/source/Marae) of the local [Ngāti Tūwharetoa](/source/Ng%C4%81ti_T%C5%ABwharetoa) [hapū](/source/Hap%C5%AB) of [Ngāti Hikairo](/source/Ng%C4%81ti_Hikairo_(Ng%C4%81ti_T%C5%ABwharetoa)).[4] It includes the Okahukura [meeting house](/source/Wharenui).[5]

In October 2020, the Government committed $1,338,668 from the [Provincial Growth Fund](/source/Provincial_Growth_Fund) to upgrade the marae and 4 other Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae, creating 19 jobs.[6]
