**Otto Wallburg** (21 February 1889 – 29 October 1944) was a German [actor](/source/Actor) and [Kabarett](/source/Kabarett) performer.[1] He was a prolific [film actor](/source/Film_actor) during the late [silent](/source/Silent_film) and early [sound era](/source/Sound_era). He was arrested by the Nazis when they occupied the Netherlands and was killed in [Auschwitz](/source/Auschwitz_concentration_camp) in October 1944.

Wallburg was born **Otto Maximilian Wasserzug** in [Berlin](/source/Berlin), the son of a [Jewish](/source/Jewish) [banker](/source/Bank). He drifted into stage acting, but served in the [German Army](/source/German_Army_(German_Empire)) during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) and was wounded on the Eastern Front after winning an [Iron Cross](/source/Iron_Cross). From 1926 onwards he worked in the large German film industry, including many productions made by [UFA](/source/Universum_Film_AG).

When the [Nazis](/source/Nazi) came to power in 1933 he left Germany and moved to [Austria](/source/Austria) where he continued to work in film. He later moved to [France](/source/France) and then on to the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). He was arrested following the 1940 [German invasion of the Netherlands](/source/Battle_of_the_Netherlands). He was held for a while at [Westerbork transit camp](/source/Westerbork_transit_camp), and later deported to [Auschwitz](/source/Auschwitz_concentration_camp) where he was murdered towards the end of October 1944.
