== Life ==
Armster was a friend of Admiral [Wilhelm Canaris](/source/Wilhelm_Canaris) head of the [counter-intelligence](/source/counter-intelligence) ([Abwehr](/source/Abwehr)) and stood in contact with the [circuit of resistance](/source/German_resistance_to_Nazism) since 1939. As a [colonel](/source/colonel) and head of the counter-intelligence station in [Vienna](/source/Vienna) since April 1944, he worked closely with [Georg Alexander Hansen](/source/Georg_Hansen), [Hans Oster](/source/Hans_Oster) and [Ludwig Gehre](/source/Ludwig_Gehre).

In connection with his resistance activities Armster had constant contact to General [Friedrich Olbricht](/source/Friedrich_Olbricht) and other conspirators of the [20 July plot](/source/20_July_plot), through Olbricht’s confidant Hermann Kaiser. Armster has been designated by the conspirators to become [liaison officer](/source/liaison_officer) of defense circle XVIII ([Salzburg](/source/Salzburg)).

On 23 July 1944 Armster had been arrested by the [Gestapo](/source/Gestapo) and transported to [Berlin](/source/Berlin), where he was taken into custody at the [solitary confinement](/source/solitary_confinement) prison on Lehrter Street until 25 April 1945.
