# Ottar Lie

**Ottar Lie** (5 March 1896 – 1 March 1943) was a Norwegian communist and resistance member.

He was born in [Løten Municipality](/source/L%C3%B8ten_Municipality), to a father from [Vang Municipality](/source/Vang_Municipality_(Hedmark)) and a mother from [Ås Municipality](/source/%C3%85s_Municipality). He was married twice, last to Inga, née Knutsen. He had two children, and lived in Oslo.[1]

He was originally a member of the [Norwegian Labour Party](/source/Norwegian_Labour_Party). In 1921 he was hired as county secretary in [Hedmark](/source/Hedmark).[2]: 86 At the time he was also active in the [Young Communist League](/source/Young_Communist_League_of_Norway) (until 1923 the Labour Party youth wing).[2]: 117 In 1923, at the founding of the [Communist Party](/source/Communist_Party_of_Norway), Lie became Hedmark's representative in the central board.[2]: 89 He continued as party secretary in Hedmark until 1927, then in [Oslo](/source/Oslo) for the party nationwide.[3]: 621 Before it was stopped in 1940, Lie was also a board member of the newspaper *[Arbeideren](/source/Arbeideren)*.[4]

He was a member of the [Communist](/source/Communist_Party_of_Norway) [resistance movement](/source/Norwegian_resistance_movement), as Norway was [occupied by Nazi Germany](/source/Occupation_of_Norway_by_Nazi_Germany) from 1940.[1] In the now-illegal Communist Party he was one of the leading figures together with [Henry W. Kristiansen](/source/Henry_W._Kristiansen), [Just Lippe](/source/Just_Lippe), [Johan Strand Johansen](/source/Johan_Strand_Johansen) and [Emil Løvlien](/source/Emil_L%C3%B8vlien).[3]: 367 He was held imprisoned in [Møllergata 19](/source/M%C3%B8llergata_19) from August to September 1940.[5] Eventually, together with [Arne Gauslaa](/source/Arne_Gauslaa) he led the party's organizational centre which had contact with communist resistance members who hid in the mountains. The centre was moved from [Steinsfjorden](/source/Steinsfjorden) to [Vikersund](/source/Vikersund) in October 1942.[3]: 375 The centre was blown after former resistance member [Karsten Sølvberg](/source/Karsten_S%C3%B8lvberg) had cracked during [Gestapo](/source/Gestapo) torture, become a Gestapo agent and ratted them out.[6] Already on 30 October 1942 the centre in Vikersund was surrounded by Gestapists.[1] Gauslaa and another person were shot to death. Lie was arrested and tortured.[3]: 375 He was held at Møllergata 19 from 30 October 1942, then in [Grini detention camp](/source/Grini_detention_camp) from 24 February 1943. He was transferred to [Trandum](/source/Trandum) on 1 March 1943 and executed at [Trandumskogen](/source/Trandumskogen).[5] He was buried in Oslo.[1]

His brother Ivar Lie was also a communist resistance member, who managed to flee to Sweden.[3]: 483
