'''Osterwalde''' is a medieval shire ([Gau](/source/Gau_(country_subdivision))) in the [Eastphalia](/source/Eastphalia) region of the [Duchy of Saxony](/source/Duchy_of_Saxony). In present-day terms, it is located in northern [Saxony-Anhalt](/source/Saxony-Anhalt). It was bordered by the River [Ohre](/source/Ohre) to the west and by the River [Dumme](/source/Wustrower_Dumme) to the north; its eastern borders are unclear; it possibly reached all the way to the River [Elbe](/source/Elbe). The most important town was [Salzwedel](/source/Salzwedel), other towns were [Seebenau](/source/Seebenau), [Tylsen](/source/Tylsen), and [Osterwohle](/source/Osterwohle), after which it is probably named. Neighboring shires include [Drevani](/source/Drevani), [Chojna](/source/Gmina_Chojna), [Balsamgau](/source/Balsamgau), [Nordthüringgau](/source/Nordth%C3%BCringgau), [Derlingau](/source/Derlingau), and [Bardengau](/source/Bardengau).

By the 12th century, the Gau Osterwalde had become a part of the [Margraviate of Brandenburg](/source/Margraviate_of_Brandenburg). Together with the Balsamgau, it formed the westernmost part of Brandenburg, which later came to be known as the [Altmark](/source/Altmark).
