Founded immediately after the [military coup](/source/1971_military_coup_(Turkey)) on 12 March 1971 the magazine was one of the oppositional publications in the country. The editors and contributors of the magazine included many significant Turkish journalists, including [Mümtaz Soysal](/source/M%C3%BCmtaz_Soysal), [Muammer Aksoy](/source/Muammer_Aksoy) and [Uğur Mumcu](/source/U%C4%9Fur_Mumcu) among others.

''Ortam'' was established by Kemal Bisalman and first published in April 1971.<ref name=hur/> The headquarters of the magazine was in [Cağaloğlu](/source/Ca%C4%9Falo%C4%9Flu), Istanbul.<ref name=ayca/> The magazine was published by Vatan Publishing company on a weekly basis on Saturdays.<ref name=cum/><ref name=tbmm>{{cite web|url=https://www5.tbmm.gov.tr/tutanaklar/TUTANAK/MM__/d03/c023/b058/mm__030230580219.pdf|publisher=TBMM|access-date=14 September 2021|date=10 March 1972|title=Parliament Documents|language=tr}}</ref> The founding editor-in-chief was Mümtaz Soysal.<ref name=ayca/> He was arrested by the military authorities after the publication of the second issue, and ''Ortam'' did not appear until June 1971 when it was published under the editorship of Muammer Aksoy.<ref name=ayca/> He was also arrested following the tenth issue of ''Ortam''.<ref name=ayca/> After this the post of editor-in-chief was not mentioned in the masthead of the magazine.<ref name=ayca/>
