# Ornytion

In [Greek mythology](/source/Greek_mythology), **Ornytion** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek): Ὀρνύτιων means 'moon-bird'[1]) or **Ornytus** (Ὄρνυτος)[2] may refer to two different characters:

- Ornytion, also known as [Porphyrion](/source/Porphyrion_(mythology)),[3] a [Corinthian](/source/Ancient_Corinth) prince who later succeeded his father, King [Sisyphus](/source/Sisyphus), as the ruler of the [Ephyraean](/source/Ancient_Corinth) land. His mother was the [Pleiad](/source/Pleiades_(Greek_mythology)) [Merope](/source/Merope_(Pleiad)), daughter of the [Titan](/source/Titans) [Atlas](/source/Atlas_(mythology)). Ornytion was the brother of [Glaucus](/source/Glaucus_of_Corinth), [Thersandrus](/source/Thersander) and [Almus](/source/Almus_of_Orchomenus), and the father of [Phocus](/source/Phocus_of_Corinth) and [Thoas](/source/Thoas_(king_of_Corinth)).[4] A [scholiast](/source/Scholia) on [Euripides](/source/Euripides) related of him that he came from [Aonia](/source/Aonia) to join the people of [Hyampolis](/source/Hyampolis) in the battle against the [Opuntian Locrians](/source/Opuntian_Locris) over [Daphnus](/source/Daphnus) and won himself the kingdom, which he handed over to Phocus and returned to Corinth with his other son, [Thoas](/source/Thoas_(king_of_Corinth)), who later succeeded him.[5]
- Ornytion, son of Phocus and thus grandson of the former above Ornytion. He was the father of [Naubolus](/source/Naubolus_(mythology)).[6]
