**Orlando António Fernandes da Costa** (July 1929 − 27 January 2006) was a Portuguese writer of [Goan](/source/Goans) paternal and Portuguese-French[1] maternal descent whose writings express his experiences of life in [Goa](/source/Goa).[2] According to Everton Machado, his book *O Último Olhar de Manú Miranda* is a good introduction to know Indo-Portuguese literature.[3] He was the father of the current [President of the European Council](/source/President_of_the_European_Council) and the former Portuguese Prime Minister [Antonio Costa](/source/Antonio_Costa), by his first wife [Maria Antónia Palla](/source/Maria_Ant%C3%B3nia_Palla).[4] Costa was maternal cousin to [Sérgio Vieira](/source/S%C3%A9rgio_Vieira_(politician)), a politician in Mozambique.[5]

## Biography

After being raised in [Margão](/source/Marg%C3%A3o), [Portuguese Goa](/source/Portuguese_Goa), Costa spent in the 1950s, most of his time in [Casa dos Estudantes do Império](/source/Casa_dos_Estudantes_do_Imp%C3%A9rio), an institution mainly built to house students from the [Portuguese colonies](/source/Portuguese_colonies) that were studying in the [metropole](/source/Metropole). There, he came in contact with many of the future leaders of the nationalist movements of the colonies, such as the [MPLA](/source/MPLA), the [FRELIMO](/source/FRELIMO) and the [PAIGC](/source/African_Party_for_the_Independence_of_Guinea_and_Cape_Verde). Between 1950 and 1953, he was arrested three times by the [Salazar](/source/Ant%C3%B3nio_de_Oliveira_Salazar) government.[6][7] A few days before he died, on January 5, 2006, he received from [Jorge Sampaio](/source/Jorge_Sampaio)'s hands the degree of Commander of the Order of Liberty.[8]
