# Ori Kritz

**Ori Kritz** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): אורי קריץ) is an Associate Professor and head of the [Hebrew Language](/source/Hebrew_Language) and Literature program at the [University of Oklahoma](/source/University_of_Oklahoma), a part of the [Judaic Studies](/source/Judaic_Studies) department.[\[1\]](http://ou.edu/cas/judaicstudies/people/faculty) She is a multilingual writer and speaker, specializing in [Yiddish](/source/Yiddish), [Hebrew](/source/Hebrew), and [Jewish](/source/Jew) literature and in Jewish and [Israeli](/source/Israel) humor.[1]

## Biography

Kritz was born and raised in [Israel](/source/Israel). She studied at [Tel Aviv University](/source/Tel_Aviv_University), earning a [B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in Philosophy and Hebrew Literature in 1981 and an [M.A.](/source/Master's_degree) in Hebrew literature in 1986, with Professor Uzi Shavit as her thesis advisor. Her thesis is entitled *Up Against Gloomy Skies: On Mordechai Tembkin's Poetry*. At Tel Aviv University, she specialized in both modern and [medieval](/source/Medieval) Hebrew literature. She later earned an [M.Phil.](/source/Master_of_Philosophy) in 1991 and a [Ph.D](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in 1993 from [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University); both degrees in Yiddish Literature. Her dissertation, entitled *The Poetics of Anarchy: [David Edelshtat](/source/David_Edelshtat)'s Revolutionary Poetry*, covers thematic, prosodic, rhetorical and ideological aspects of American Yiddish ideological poetry. She was advised by Professor Benjamin Harshav[2] ([Yale University](/source/Yale_University)).

Kritz has since taught at [Emory University](/source/Emory_University), Gordon College ([Haifa](/source/Haifa)), and the [University of Oklahoma](/source/University_of_Oklahoma). Kritz is also featured in the 2005 film, *[The Hebrew Project](/source/The_Hebrew_Project)*.[3]
