**Oregon Route 78** is an [Oregon](/source/Oregon) [state highway](/source/State_highway) running from [Burns](/source/Burns,_Oregon) in [Harney County](/source/Harney_County,_Oregon) to [Burns Junction](/source/Burns_Junction,_Oregon) in [Malheur County](/source/Malheur_County,_Oregon). OR 78 is known as the **Steens Highway No. 442** (see [Oregon highways and routes](/source/Oregon_highways_and_routes)). It is 91.55 miles (147.34 km) long and runs northwest to southeast.

## Route description

OR 78 begins at an intersection with [US 20](/source/U.S._Route_20_(Oregon)) and [US 395](/source/U.S._Route_395_(Oregon)) in Burns and continues southeast through [Crane](/source/Crane,_Oregon) and [New Princeton](/source/New_Princeton,_Oregon) to Burns Junction, where it ends at an intersection with [US 95](/source/U.S._Route_95_(Oregon)).

## History

OR 78 was assigned to the **Burns-Crane Highway No. 24** when the [Oregon route numbering](/source/State_highways_in_Oregon) system was initiated in 1932.
