Founded in 1423 originally under the name '''Lesser [Tábor](/source/T%C3%A1bor)''', it consisted mostly of poorer burghers and some members of the [Czech nobility](/source/Czech_nobility) who joined with the commander [Jan Žižka](/source/Jan_%C5%BDi%C5%BEka).

The ideological founder of the Orebites was the priest [Ambrož Hradecký](/source/Ambro%C5%BE_Hradeck%C3%BD). Leaders included [Hynek Krušina of Lichtenburg](/source/Hynek_Kru%C5%A1ina_of_Lichtenburg) and [Diviš Bořek of Miletínek](/source/Divi%C5%A1_Bo%C5%99ek_of_Milet%C3%ADnek), the captain of the Hussites in Eastern and Central Bohemia. The Orebites were instrumental in the burning of the Benedictine monastery in [Mnichovo Hradiště](/source/Mnichovo_Hradi%C5%A1t%C4%9B) in the early summer of 1420, and in autumn, they supported the rest of the Hussites at the [Battle of Vyšehrad](/source/Battle_of_Vy%C5%A1ehrad).

After Žižka's death (1424) left them "orphaned", these combatants adopted their new name. From 1424 to 1428, they were led by the priest [Ambrož](/source/Ambro%C5%BE_Hradeck%C3%BD) of [Hradec](/source/Hradec_Kr%C3%A1lov%C3%A9) and then by another priest, [Prokop the Lesser](/source/Prokop_the_Lesser). ''[Hejtman](/source/Hejtman)'' [Jan Čapek of Sány](/source/Jan_%C4%8Capek_of_S%C3%A1ny) was elected as their military commander (1431–1434). After 1457, most supporters belonged to the ''[Bohemian Brethren](/source/Bohemian_Brethren) church'' and played an important role in its development.
