The **Orange Line** is a [Bay Area Rapid Transit](/source/Bay_Area_Rapid_Transit) (BART) line in the [San Francisco Bay Area](/source/San_Francisco_Bay_Area) that runs between [Berryessa/North San José station](/source/Berryessa%2FNorth_San_Jos%C3%A9_station) and [Richmond station](/source/Richmond_station_(California)). It has 21 stations in [San Jose](/source/San_Jose%2C_California), [Milpitas](/source/Milpitas%2C_California), [Fremont](/source/Fremont%2C_California), [Union City](/source/Union_City%2C_California), [Hayward](/source/Hayward%2C_California), [San Leandro](/source/San_Leandro%2C_California), [Oakland](/source/Oakland%2C_California), [Berkeley](/source/Berkeley%2C_California), [El Cerrito](/source/El_Cerrito%2C_California), and [Richmond](/source/Richmond%2C_California). It is the only one of the five primary BART services that does not run through the [Transbay Tube](/source/Transbay_Tube) to San Francisco; however, it shares tracks with the four other primary services in the East Bay.

## History

The Orange Line was the first BART line to open. Initial services between [MacArthur](/source/MacArthur_station_(BART)) and [Fremont](/source/Fremont_station_(BART)) stations began on September 11, 1972, with full service extending to [Richmond](/source/Richmond_station_(California)) beginning on January 29, 1973.[2]

The line would not see any major changes for another 45 years, until the start of the [Silicon Valley BART extension](/source/Silicon_Valley_BART_extension). The first phase of the project extended the line to [Warm Springs/South Fremont station](/source/Warm_Springs%2FSouth_Fremont_station) in March 2017,[3][4] the second phase added [Berryessa/North San José](/source/Berryessa%2FNorth_San_Jos%C3%A9_station) and [Milpitas](/source/Milpitas_station) stations in June 2020.[5][6]

## Route

The Orange Line runs primarily north-south through the East Bay. It uses the [R-Line](/source/BART_R-Line) between [Richmond station](/source/Richmond_station_(California)) and just north of [MacArthur station](/source/MacArthur_station_(BART)), the [K-Line](/source/BART_K-Line) between MacArthur and the [Oakland Wye](/source/Oakland_Wye), the [A-Line](/source/BART_A-Line) between the Wye and [Fremont station](/source/Fremont_station_(BART)), and the [S-Line](/source/BART_S-Line) between Fremont and [Berryessa/North San José station](/source/Berryessa%2FNorth_San_Jos%C3%A9_station). Most sections are at-grade or elevated; the line runs through tunnels in downtown Berkeley, downtown Oakland, and under [Lake Elizabeth](/source/Lake_Elizabeth_(Fremont%2C_California)).
