The **Oneida River** is a [river](/source/River) that forms a portion of the boundary between [Oswego](/source/Oswego_County%2C_New_York) and [Onondaga](/source/Onondaga_County%2C_New_York) counties in central [New York](/source/New_York_(state)).[2][3] The river flows 18 miles (29 km) from [Oneida Lake](/source/Oneida_Lake)'s outlet to its [confluence](/source/Confluence_(geography)) with the [Seneca River](/source/Seneca_River_(New_York)), where the two rivers combine to form the [Oswego River](/source/Oswego_River_(New_York)) that empties into [Lake Ontario](/source/Lake_Ontario).[3]

The river was known to the [Onondaga people](/source/Onondaga_people) as *Sah-eh*,[4] and was referred to during the [colonial era](/source/Colonial_history_of_the_United_States) as the Onondaga River.[5]

The river is utilized for boating and shipping as part of the [New York State Barge Canal](/source/New_York_State_Barge_Canal).[3]
