**One Web Day** is an annual day of Internet celebration and awareness held on September 22. The stated goal of founder [Susan P. Crawford](/source/Susan_P._Crawford) is for OneWebDay to foster and make visible a global constituency that cares about the future of the Internet.[1]

## History

The first OneWebDay was held on September 22, 2006. The idea was created by [Susan P. Crawford](/source/Susan_P._Crawford), who was an [ICANN](/source/ICANN) board member at the time, in association with other Internet figures such as [Doc Searls](/source/Doc_Searls), [David Weinberger](/source/David_Weinberger), [David R. Johnson](/source/David_R._Johnson), [Mary Hodder](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mary_Hodder_(author)&action=edit&redlink=1), and [David Isenberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_Isenberg&action=edit&redlink=1), who would all join the board of what would eventually become a [501(c)(3)](/source/501(c)(3)) corporation – OneWebDay Inc. A website was established and a global network of events promoted. The 2006 OneWebDay's anchor celebration featured speakers [Craig Newmark](/source/Craig_Newmark), [Scott Heiferman](/source/Scott_Heiferman), and [Drew Schutte](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Drew_Schutte&action=edit&redlink=1) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City)'s [Battery Park](/source/Battery_Park).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

By 2008 OneWebDay had grown to more than 30 international events.[2] In [Washington Square Park](/source/Washington_Square_Park), New York City, speakers included Crawford, [John Perry Barlow](/source/John_Perry_Barlow), [Jonathan Zittrain](/source/Jonathan_Zittrain), [Craig Newmark](/source/Craig_Newmark), and [Lawrence Lessig](/source/Lawrence_Lessig).[3]

In May 2009, after founder Crawford had joined the [Obama administration](/source/Obama_administration), [Mitch Kapor](/source/Mitch_Kapor) took over chairmanship of OneWebDay. It was also announced that funding had been granted by the [Ford Foundation](/source/Ford_Foundation).[4] A [ning](/source/Ning_(website))-based organizing network was set up.[5]

In April 2010, it was announced that OneWebDay would "retire its brand" and be folded into a new [Mozilla Foundation](/source/Mozilla_Foundation) year-round initiative called Drumbeat.[6]

In August 2010, a number of veterans[*[clarification needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*] took over organizing the 2010 event on a volunteer basis. A new website and network was established. Events took place in several cities including New York City, [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne), [Kolkata](/source/Calcutta), [Chennai](/source/Chennai), [London](/source/London), and [Pachuca](/source/Pachuca).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

In 2011, the main event was a presentation in New York City by [Bob Frankston](/source/Bob_Frankston) – "Infrastructure commons – the future of connectivity".[7]

In 2012 the theme of OneWebDay was advancing local content.[8]

In 2013 the theme was [accessibility](/source/Accessibility), particularly in remembrance of web-accessibility advocate [Cynthia Waddell](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cynthia_Waddell&action=edit&redlink=1), who died in April 2013.[9]

In 2014 the OneWebDay theme was *Recognizing Core Internet Values*, and promoted the viewing of three videos: a [TEDx](/source/TEDx) talk by [Dave Moskowitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dave_Moskowitz&action=edit&redlink=1), "The Internet Belongs to Everyone" from the [United States State Department](/source/United_States_Department_of_State), and the Dynamic Coalition on Core Internet Values at the 2014 [Internet Governance Forum](/source/Internet_Governance_Forum).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

In 2015 the theme is *Connecting the Next Billion*, aligned with the current IGF Intersessional Program,[10] and promotes the viewing of a speech by [Catherine Novelli](/source/Catherine_Novelli) – 'Connecting The World' at the USA-IGF in July 2015.

In 2016 the theme was again *Connecting the Next Billion*, this time highlighting a speech by United States Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment [Catherine A. Novelli](/source/Catherine_A._Novelli).

In 2017 the theme was *Open The Pipes*, about the need for connectivity for Community Networks, and highlights a speech by [Internet Society](/source/Internet_Society) CEO/President Kathy Brown at [Mobile World Congress](/source/Mobile_World_Congress) in Shanghai.

In 2018 the theme was, in co-ordination with the [Global People's Summit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Global_People%27s_Summit&action=edit&redlink=1), "Reimagine Humanity: Changing the Status Quo" and promoted participation in a global conversation about ways of achieving the [Sustainable Development Goals](/source/Sustainable_Development_Goals).
