'''''One Step Beyond...''''' is the debut studio album by the English [ska](/source/ska) and [pop](/source/Pop_music) band [Madness](/source/Madness_(band)), released on 19 October 1979 by [Stiff Records](/source/Stiff_Records).<ref>{{cite magazine |title=Releases |magazine=[Record Mirror](/source/Record_Mirror) |location=London |issn=0144-5804 |date=20 October 1979 |page=5}}</ref> Recorded and mixed in about three weeks, the album peaked at number two and remained on the [UK Albums Chart](/source/UK_Albums_Chart) for more than a year. The album has received much critical praise. It was ranked 90th in a 2005 survey held by British television station [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4) to determine the 100 greatest albums of all time.

This was the first album produced by the team of [Clive Langer](/source/Clive_Langer) and [Alan Winstanley](/source/Alan_Winstanley), who would go on to produce more Madness albums and to work with artists including [Elvis Costello and the Attractions](/source/Elvis_Costello_and_the_Attractions), [Morrissey](/source/Morrissey), [Dexys Midnight Runners](/source/Dexys_Midnight_Runners), [They Might Be Giants](/source/They_Might_Be_Giants) and [David Bowie](/source/David_Bowie).

==Background==
The "Nutty Train" photo on the sleeve, shot by [Cameron McVey](/source/Cameron_McVey), was inspired by a photo of [Kilburn and the High Roads](/source/Kilburn_and_the_High_Roads) roadie Paul Tonkin that appeared on the back cover of the band's album ''Handsome''.<ref>{{cite web |last=Simpson |first=Dave |title=Suggs and Mike Barson of Madness: how we made One Step Beyond |url=https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2014/nov/25/how-we-made-one-step-beyond-madness-suggs-mike-barson |work=The Guardian |date=25 November 2014}}</ref>

The title track, released as a single, was originally written and recorded by the [Jamaica](/source/Jamaica)n [ska](/source/ska) musician [Prince Buster](/source/Prince_Buster), and its "Don't watch that, watch this ..." introduction is adapted from another Prince Buster song, "The Scorcher". The track "[The Prince](/source/The_Prince_(song))" is a tribute to Buster and a re-recording of the band's debut single, originally released on the [2 Tone](/source/2_Tone_Records) label.<ref>{{cite book |last=Edwards |first=Terry |date=2009 |title=Madness' One Step Beyond... "Madness" and "Bed and Breakfast Man" were released as singles in North America through [Sire Records](/source/Sire_Records).<ref>{{cite web |title=Madness – Discography |url=http://www.45cat.com/artist/madness/all |publisher=45cat.com |access-date=11 October 2021}}</ref>

After the album's initial release, reissues were released in 2009 and 2014 by Union Square Music's collector's label Salvo,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.unionsquaremusic.co.uk/shop/labels.asp?label=Salvo|title=Salvo|publisher=Union Square Music |access-date=11 October 2021}}</ref> each containing additional material such as video productions featuring the band.

In ''[Sounds](/source/Sounds_(magazine))'', [Garry Bushell](/source/Garry_Bushell) praised ''One Step Beyond...'' as "an intensely enjoyable album, a disc of many moods", writing that "Madness manage to add a [Billy Bentley](/source/Kilburn_and_the_High_Roads) [cockney](/source/cockney) stamp to their very own brand of [reggae](/source/reggae) crossed with sax embroidered, happy fairground nuttiness and it works surprisingly well."<ref name="Sounds"/> ''[NME](/source/NME)'' critic Deanne Pearson found that the album affirmed "that they have a style and distinctiveness of their own", observing "a warm, easy familiarity about Madness" distinguishing them from fellow ska band [the Specials](/source/the_Specials).<ref>{{cite magazine |title=Blue Feat |magazine=[NME](/source/NME) |location=London |issn=0028-6362 |date=27 October 1979 |last=Pearson |first=Deanne |page=47}}</ref>

''One Step Beyond...'', along with the Specials' [self-titled debut](/source/The_Specials_(album))—released on the same day in October 1979—played an important part in popularising [2 tone](/source/2_Tone_(music_genre)) music in the UK. The albums were also a great influence on other bands of the genre.

== Music videos ==
Five promotional music videos were filmed to promote the singles during the album's release. All of these, with the exception of "The Prince" (which was in fact a ''[Top of the Pops](/source/Top_of_the_Pops)'' performance only released in the UK and used the single version for the video) were in rotation on [MTV](/source/MTV) during its first few years. Some of these promo videos were also featured in other music TV outlets, such as ''Top of the Pops''. However, in 2022 Madness released two new videos for the album versions of "The Prince" and "Madness", with footage taken from the 1981 Madness' documentary movie ''[Take It or Leave It](/source/Take_It_or_Leave_It_(1981_film))''.
