**On Trust** (foaled 1944 in [California](/source/California)) was an American [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) racehorse whom the [Bridgeport, Connecticut](/source/Bridgeport,_Connecticut), *Sunday Herald* called "one of the most distinguished and durable performers to come out of the state of California." His dam was Torch Rose and his sire was [Alibhai](/source/Alibhai_(horse)), a [British](/source/Great_Britain) stallion who was imported by [MGM Studios](/source/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) boss [Louis B. Mayer](/source/Louis_B._Mayer) to the United States to stand at his stud farm in [Perris, California](/source/Perris,_California). On Trust was bred by Mayer, who raced him mid-way through his 1946 racing campaign, then sold the two-year-old to Earl Stice and his sons Rod and Gary, businessmen from [Eagle Rock](/source/Eagle_Rock,_Los_Angeles).[1]

Trained by future [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee [William Molter](/source/William_Molter), On Trust earned his only win at age two in the California Homebred Stakes at [Bay Meadows Racetrack](/source/Bay_Meadows_Racetrack).

## Triple Crown races

When On Trust was three, [Ralph Neves](/source/Ralph_Neves) rode him to a victory in February 1947 [Santa Maria Handicap](/source/Santa_Maria_Handicap)[2] that put him on the path to that year's [U.S. Triple Crown](/source/United_States_Triple_Crown_of_Thoroughbred_Racing) series. Following his win in the most prestigious race for three-year-olds on the [West Coast](/source/West_Coast_of_the_United_States), the [Santa Anita Derby](/source/Santa_Anita_Derby),[3] On Trust was sent off as the [bettors](/source/Parimutuel_wagering) second choice in the [Kentucky Derby](/source/Kentucky_Derby)[4] but finished fourth to [Jet Pilot](/source/Jet_Pilot_(horse)) in the 1947 Kentucky Derby[5] and second to [Faultless](/source/Faultless) in the [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes).[6] He did not run in the third leg of the Triple Crown, the [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes).[7]

On Trust continued to compete at top levels into age six in 1950, a year when he equaled the [Tanforan Racetrack](/source/Tanforan_Racetrack) [track record](/source/Glossary_of_North_American_horse_racing#Track_record.2FCourse_record) of 1:50 3/5 for a mile and an eighth on dirt.[8]

## Stud record

On Trust retired from racing in January 1951 as California's leading money winner and sixth of all time in the United States. He was sent to [stud](/source/Horse_breeding) duty at the Circle J. R. Ranch near [Corona, California](/source/Corona,_California).[9] He met with only limited success as a sire. Perhaps the best runner among his progeny was Trackmaster, winner of the 1955 [California Derby](/source/California_Derby) and 1956 [Santa Anita Maturity](/source/Santa_Anita_Maturity).[10]
