**Omar Rekik** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): عمر رقيق; born 20 December 2001) is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [centre-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Centre-back) for [Slovenian PrvaLiga](/source/Slovenian_PrvaLiga) club [Maribor](/source/NK_Maribor).[2] Born in the Netherlands, he represents the [Tunisia national team](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team).

## Early life

Born in [Helmond](/source/Helmond), Netherlands[3] to a Tunisian father and a Dutch mother,[4][5] Rekik was part of several big European clubs during his youth career, following his brother [Karim](/source/Karim_Rekik) from [Feyenoord](/source/Feyenoord) to [Manchester City](/source/Manchester_City_F.C.), then [PSV](/source/PSV_Eindhoven) and [Marseille](/source/Olympique_de_Marseille), before joining [Hertha Berlin](/source/Hertha_BSC) in 2017.[3][6] However, their careers eventually split during the [2020–21 season](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_Hertha_BSC_season), as Omar was transferred from the [Bundesliga](/source/Bundesliga) side to [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.) in January 2021,[7][6][8] while Karim joined Spanish side [Sevilla](/source/Sevilla_FC) a few months earlier.[5][6]

## Club career

On 31 January 2023, Rekik joined [Wigan Athletic](/source/Wigan_Athletic_F.C.) in the [EFL Championship](/source/EFL_Championship) on loan until the end of the season.[9] On 1 September 2023, he re-joined Wigan Athletic in [EFL League One](/source/EFL_League_One) on a short-term loan deal until January 2024.[10]

On 2 February 2024, Rekik moved on a new loan to [Servette](/source/Servette_FC) in Switzerland, with an option to buy.[11]

## International career

While his brother [Karim](/source/Karim_Rekik) was already capped for the senior [Netherlands national team](/source/Netherlands_national_football_team), Omar was first selected in the [Tunisia](/source/Tunisian_Football_Federation) under-21 selection in October 2018, aged just 16,[3] before joining the [Netherlands under-18](/source/Netherlands_national_under-19_football_team) a month later.[12]

Rekik eventually decided to join the [Tunisia national team](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team) in May 2021, as he was selected by [Mondher Kebaier](/source/Mondher_Kebaier) along with other young players such as [Hannibal Mejbri](/source/Hannibal_Mejbri).[4][13] He made his international senior debut on 15 June 2021, starting as a midfielder in a 1–0 [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game#Association_football) win against [Mali](/source/Mali_national_football_team).[14][15]
