**Oliver Farnworth** (born 5 August 1982) is an English actor. As well as appearing in various theatre productions, including [West End theatre](/source/West_End_theatre) roles, Farnworth has also appeared as a regular character in two [ITV1](/source/ITV1) soap operas: [Andy Carver](/source/Andy_Carver) in *[Coronation Street](/source/Coronation_Street)* (2014–2017) and [John Sugden](/source/John_Sugden_(Emmerdale)) in *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* (2024–2026). His other television appearances include recurring roles in *[The Royal](/source/The_Royal)* (2008–2009) and *[Mr Selfridge](/source/Mr_Selfridge)* (2014).

## Life and career

Farnworth was brought up just outside [Halifax](/source/Halifax%2C_West_Yorkshire) in [Hebden Bridge](/source/Hebden_Bridge), [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire), but moved to [Sidmouth](/source/Sidmouth) in [Devon](/source/Devon) when he was fifteen. He trained at the [Bristol Old Vic Theatre School](/source/Bristol_Old_Vic_Theatre_School).[2] He first came to recognition in *[Hollyoaks](/source/Hollyoaks)* playing [Will Hackett](/source/Will_Hackett) from September 2006 to May 2007.[3]

Before appearing in *[Hollyoaks](/source/Hollyoaks)*, Farnworth appeared on stage in *[The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe](/source/The_Lion%2C_the_Witch_and_the_Wardrobe)* and in *The London Plays*, written by Ed Hime and directed by Kelly Wilkinson.[2] He has also appeared in three episodes of [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_network))1's 1960s medical drama *[The Royal](/source/The_Royal)*, playing a character called Nev Cartwright.[4] In 2008, Farnworth played the leading role in *[Saturday Night and Sunday Morning](/source/Saturday_Night_and_Sunday_Morning)* at the Harrogate Theatre,[5] and Lysander with the British Shakespeare Company in *[A Midsummer Night's Dream](/source/A_Midsummer_Night's_Dream)*. In 2009 he appeared in *[The Merchant of Venice](/source/The_Merchant_of_Venice)* at Penshurst Place Gardens in Kent.[4] In April 2010, Farnworth appeared in the [West End theatre](/source/West_End_theatre) production of *[Holding the Man](/source/Holding_the_Man)* at the [Trafalgar Theatre](/source/Trafalgar_Theatre).[6]

In 2014, Farnworth played Florian Dupont, a [Belgian refugee](/source/Belgian_refugees#Britain), in the TV series *[Mr Selfridge](/source/Mr_Selfridge)* before joining the cast of *[Coronation Street](/source/Coronation_Street)* as [Andy Carver](/source/List_of_Coronation_Street_characters_(2014)#Andy_Carver); his departure was announced in 2016.[7] His last scene, aired on 20 January 2017, saw him being supposedly killed by [Pat Phelan](/source/Pat_Phelan_(Coronation_Street)) ([Connor McIntyre](/source/Connor_McIntyre)).[8] However, on 18 August 2017, Farnworth made an unexpected and unannounced return; revealing that Phelan was in fact, holding him captive in the cellar of an abandoned house until his death on 27 October 2017.[9] In 2019, he has appeared in the TV Series *[Endeavour](/source/Endeavour_(TV_series))*, playing the role of PC Rich Potter. Farnworth joined the cast of *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* in 2024, playing [John Sugden](/source/John_Sugden_(Emmerdale)). His first episode aired on 7 August 2024.[10]
