In 1641 Olevsk was granted [Magdeburg city rights](/source/Magdeburg_city_rights) by Polish King [Władysław IV Vasa](/source/W%C5%82adys%C5%82aw_IV_Vasa). Later it became a town in [Volhynian Governorate](/source/Volhynian_Governorate) of the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire).[2] During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) on November 15 or 21, 1941, members of [Taras Bulba-Borovets](/source/Taras_Bulba-Borovets)' [Ukrainian People's Revolutionary Army](/source/Ukrainian_People's_Revolutionary_Army) collaborated with the German administration in taking more than 500 Jews from Olevsk to [Varvarivka](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Varvarivka&action=edit&redlink=1), where they were murdered.[3] On December 25, 2011, the city council of Olevsk renamed the streets of the city that bore the names of Soviet leaders, naming them in honor of prominent figures of the Ukrainian nationalist and patriotic movement. The streets and lanes named after [Pavel Postyshev](/source/Pavel_Postyshev), [Stanislav Kosior](/source/Stanislav_Kosior), [Hryhoriy Petrovsky](/source/Grigory_Petrovsky), [Mikhail Kalinin](/source/Mikhail_Kalinin), and [Hryhoriy Kotovsky](/source/Grigory_Kotovsky) were renamed. Instead, they were named after [Olena Teliha](/source/Olena_Teliha), [Oleh Olzhych](/source/Oleh_Olzhych), [Hetman Vyhovsky](/source/Ivan_Vyhovsky), Oleksiy Opanasiuk, [Heroes of Kruty](/source/Battle_of_Kruty), the 20th anniversary of [Ukraine's independence](/source/Declaration_of_Independence_of_Ukraine), and [Yuriy Tiutiunnyk](/source/Yuriy_Tyutyunnyk).[4] ## Geography Olevsk is located in the north-west of Korosten District of Zhytomyr Oblast, 180 km from the regional center. The city is located on the [Polesian Lowland](/source/Polesian_Lowland), in Zhytomyr [Polissya](/source/Polesia) .[5][6] Mixed forests, swamps and lakes occur around the city. Pine, hornbeam and oak are most often found in the forests. The city is located on the right bank of the [Pripyat River](/source/Pripyat_(river)), a right tributary of the [Dnieper River](/source/Dnieper). The climate of the territory is moderately continental, with humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is about 10 °C, the average temperature in January is 4-5 °C, and in July it is about + 20 °C.
