Okny is located on the banks of the [Yahorlik River](/source/Yahorlik_River), a left tributary of the [Dniester](/source/Dniester).
==History==
Okny was founded in the end of the 18th century by Moldovan settlers.[{{cite web|url=http://odesskiy.com/regioni-odesskoy-oblasti/krasnye-okna.html|title=Красные Окны - райцентр в Одесской области|publisher=Чисто Одесский сайт|language=Russian|accessdate=21 May 2016}}] The area was settled after 1792, when the lands between the [Southern Bug](/source/Southern_Bug) and the [Dniester](/source/Dniester) were transferred to Russia according to the [Iasi Peace Treaty](/source/Treaty_of_Jassy). The area was included in [Tiraspol Uyezd](/source/Tiraspol_Uyezd), which belonged to [Yekaterinoslav Viceroyalty](/source/Yekaterinoslav_Viceroyalty) until 1795, [Voznesensk Viceroyalty](/source/Voznesensk_Viceroyalty) until 1796, [Novorossiya Governorate](/source/Novorossiya_Governorate) until 1803, and [Kherson Governorate](/source/Kherson_Governorate) until 1920. In 1834, the area was transferred to newly established [Ananyiv Uyezd](/source/Ananyiv_Uyezd). In 1919, Okny was renamed Krasni Okny.
On 16 April 1920, [Odesa Governorate](/source/Odesa_Governorate) split off, and Ananyivsky Uyezd was moved to Odesa Governorate, where it was abolished in 1921. In 1923, [uyezd](/source/uyezd)s in [Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic](/source/Ukrainian_Soviet_Socialist_Republic) were abolished, and the governorates were divided into [okruhas](/source/Okruhas_of_the_Ukrainian_SSR). Krasni Okny was included into [Balta Okruha](/source/Balta_Okruha). On 3 July 1923 Alexiivka Raion with the administrative center in Krasni Okny was established. On 26 November 1924, Balta Okruha was abolished, and the area was transferred into newly established [Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic](/source/Moldavian_Autonomous_Soviet_Socialist_Republic). The raion was later renamed Krasni Okny. Okny Raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Odesa Oblast to seven. The area of Okny Raion was merged into Podilsk Raion.[{{Cite news|title=Про утворення та ліквідацію районів. Until 26 January 2024, Okny was designated [urban-type settlement](/source/urban-type_settlement). Okny is on the [M13 highway](/source/Highway_M13_(Ukraine)) which connects it with [Kropyvnytskyi](/source/Kropyvnytskyi) in the northeast and with the state border with the Republic of Moldova in the southwest. Beyond the border, the road crosses the unrecognized republic of [Transnistria](/source/Transnistria) and via [Dubăsari](/source/Dub%C4%83sari) continues to [Chișinău](/source/Chi%C8%99in%C4%83u). Another road proceeds southeast via [Zakharivka](/source/Zakharivka) and [Velyka Mykhailivka](/source/Velyka_Mykhailivka) with a connection to Odesa.
