'''State Route 231''' ('''SR 231''') is a {{convert|35.77|mi|km|adj=on}} long north–south [state highway](/source/state_highway) in the northwestern quadrant of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Ohio](/source/Ohio). SR 231 has its southern terminus at a [CSX](/source/CSX) [railroad crossing](/source/level_crossing) in the village of [Morral](/source/Morral%2C_Ohio). Its northern terminus is in downtown [Tiffin](/source/Tiffin%2C_Ohio) at a signalized intersection with [SR 18](/source/Ohio_State_Route_18) and [SR 101](/source/Ohio_State_Route_101), following a {{convert|0.35|mi|km}} long [concurrency](/source/concurrency_(road)) with [SR 100](/source/Ohio_State_Route_100), which continues north as a solo route north of this point.

==Route description==
The path of SR 231 takes it through northern [Marion County](/source/Marion_County%2C_Ohio), eastern [Wyandot County](/source/Wyandot_County%2C_Ohio) and southern [Seneca County](/source/Seneca_County%2C_Ohio). There are no segments of SR 231 that are included within the [National Highway System](/source/National_Highway_System_(United_States)) (NHS). The NHS is a network of highways identified as being most important for the economy, mobility and defense of the nation.<ref name="NHS">{{cite map | title=National Highway System: Ohio | date=December 2003 | publisher=[Federal Highway Administration](/source/Federal_Highway_Administration) | url=http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/nhs/maps/oh/oh_Ohio.pdf | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081016165827/http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/nhs/maps/oh/oh_Ohio.pdf | url-status=dead | archive-date=October 16, 2008 | format=PDF|access-date=2011-05-07}}</ref>

==History==
SR 231 was applied in 1923. The highway was originally a short connector route in the [Nevada](/source/Nevada%2C_Ohio) vicinity, running between the former SR 182, now County Road 182, CR 182, in Nevada and the old two-lane alignment of [U.S. Route 30](/source/U.S._Route_30_(Ohio)) (US 30), now designated as CR 330, north of the village.<ref name=ODOT1922_map>{{cite map |title=Map of Ohio State Highways |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1922a.sid |format=[MrSID](/source/MrSID) |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways and Public Works |date=April 1922 |cartography=ODHPW |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref><ref name=ODOT1923_map>{{cite map |title=Map of Ohio Showing State Routes |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1923a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways and Public Works |date=July 1923 |cartography=ODHPW |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref>

In 1932, SR 231 was extended south along the routing that it presently utilizes south of Nevada to its current southern terminus in Morral.<ref name=ODOT1931_map>{{cite map |title=Map of Ohio Showing State Highway System |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1931a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1931 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref><ref name=ODOT1932_map>{{cite map |title=Map of Ohio Showing State Highway System |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1932a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1932 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref> Five years after being extended on the south ended, SR 231 was lengthened on the north end, following its present alignment along a previously county-maintained roadway to a new northern terminus at its present eastern junction with [SR 103](/source/Ohio_State_Route_103) east of [Sycamore](/source/Sycamore%2C_Ohio).<ref name=ODOT1936_map>{{cite map |title=Official Ohio Highway Map |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1936a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1936 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref><ref name=ODOT1937_map>{{cite map |title=Official Ohio Highway Map |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1937a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1937 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref> Then, in 1939, SR 231 was extended to the north one more time, via a concurrency with SR 103 and SR 67 and then along a previously unnumbered roadway to its present northern terminus in Tiffin.<ref name=ODOT1938_map>{{cite map |title=Official Ohio Highway Map |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1938a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1938 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref><ref name=ODOT1939_map>{{cite map |title=Ohio Highway Map |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/TransSysDev/Innovation/prod_services/Documents/StateMaps/otm1939a.sid |format=MrSID |publisher=Ohio Department of Highways |date=1939 |cartography=ODOH |access-date=2011-05-13}}</ref>
