'''Odinland''' ({{langx|da|Odin Land}}),<ref>[https://asiaq.maps.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=c5c7d9d52a264980a24911d7d33914b5 Nunat Aqqi; Stednavne]</ref> also ''Odinsland'' in the [Defense Mapping Agency](/source/Defense_Mapping_Agency) Greenland Navigation charts,<ref>[http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/onc/txu-pclmaps-oclc-8322829_d_16.jpg 1:1,000,000 scale Operational Navigation Chart, Sheet D-16]</ref> is a [peninsula](/source/peninsula) in the [King Frederick VI Coast](/source/King_Frederick_VI_Coast), southeastern [Greenland](/source/Greenland). It is a part of the [Sermersooq](/source/Sermersooq) [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Greenland).

The peninsula is fully exposed to the influence of the [Greenland Ice Sheet](/source/Greenland_Ice_Sheet). In spite of the proximity of the coast and despite being located south of the [Arctic Circle](/source/Arctic_Circle), an [ice cap climate](/source/ice_cap_climate) prevails in Odinland.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/dataset_index.php |title=NASA Earth Observations Data Set |access-date=2019-03-22 |archive-date=2020-04-16 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200416144155/https://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/dataset_index.php |url-status=dead }}</ref>

==History==
[Arctic explorer](/source/Arctic_explorer) [Wilhelm August Graah](/source/Wilhelm_August_Graah) of the [Danish Navy](/source/Danish_Navy) explored this area in 1828–30, during an expedition in search of the legendary [Eastern Norse Settlement](/source/Eastern_Norse_Settlement) and named this lonely peninsula after [Odin](/source/Odin).<ref>{{cite book | last1=Graah | first1= W. A. | year=1832 | title= Undersøgelses-Reise til Østkysten af Grønland, efter kongelig Befaling udført i Aarene 1828-31 | language=da |trans-title=Exploration of the East Coast of Greenland, by royal order executed in the years 1828-31 | place= Copenhagen }}</ref>

A large icy coastal stretch was named "Colberger Heide" by Graah, owing to its shore being lined with active glaciers and ice cliffs. This was one of the most dangerous stretches of the shore for the [Southeast-Greenland Inuit](/source/Southeast-Greenland_Inuit) that used to live hunting and fishing along the coast.<ref name="SA">Spencer Apollonio, ''Lands that Hold One Spellbound: A Story of East Greenland'', p. 39</ref>

==Geography==
Odinland is surrounded to the southeast by the [Bernstorff Fjord](/source/Bernstorff_Fjord) (Kangertittivaq) —across which lies the [Thorland](/source/Thorland) Peninsula, to the east by the [Irminger Sea](/source/Irminger_Sea) and to the north by the [Umiiviip Kangertiva](/source/Umiiviip_Kangertiva) (Gyldenløve Fjord). To the west lies the [Fimbul Glacier](/source/Fimbul_Glacier) and to the northwest the peninsula is attached to the mainland.<ref name="GE">[GoogleEarth](/source/GoogleEarth)</ref>

[Cape Møsting](/source/Cape_M%C3%B8sting) ''(Kap Møsting)'' is a steep and prominent headland at the southeastern end near the mouth of the Bernstorff Fjord, at {{coord|63|41|N|40|30|W|}}. To the north of this point, the shore is bold and precipitous with glaciers protruding into the sea at every coastal cleft or ravine until the mouth of [Quseertaliip Kangertiva](/source/Quseertaliip_Kangertiva) (Otte Krumpen Fjord).<ref>''Prostar Sailing Directions 2005 Greenland and Iceland Enroute'', p. 102</ref>
At this point the northeastern part of Odinland forms the [Kangerajiip Apusiia](/source/Kangerajiip_Apusiia) (Colberger Heide), a large glacier-covered headland, limited in the southeast by the small Quseertaliip Kangertiva (Otte Krumpen Fjord), to the east by the [Irminger Sea](/source/Irminger_Sea), to the north by the [Umivik Bay](/source/Umivik_Bay) and to the northwest by the [Vikingevig](/source/Vikingevig).<ref name="mapcarta"/>

Unlike the peninsulas further south Odinland is heavily glaciated, with the large [Sleipner Glacier](/source/Sleipner_Glacier) flowing westwards from its central part and the [Gjallerbroen](/source/Gjallerbroen) flowing eastwards. The [Ydun Glacier](/source/Ydun_Glacier), [Gerd Glacier](/source/Gerd_Glacier) and [Gymer Glacier](/source/Gymer_Glacier) are smaller glaciers flowing into the Bernstorff Fjord from the southern shore. The [Gungner Ice Cap](/source/Gungner_Ice_Cap) is located in a roughly eastern position in the middle of the peninsula.
===Mountains===
In Odinland there are several [nunatak](/source/nunatak)s protruding above the ice, with [Ensom Majestaet](/source/Ensom_Majestaet) ('Lonely Majesty'), [Ensomme Skraent](/source/Ensomme_Skraent) ('Lonely Slope'), [Eqaluttusoq](/source/Eqaluttusoq), [Hammerfaldet](/source/Hammerfaldet), [Hustoppen](/source/Hustoppen) ('Housetop'), [Pelikanen](/source/Pelikanen_(nunatak)), [Spidstoppen](/source/Spidstoppen) and the [Tyr Mountains](/source/Tyr_Mountains) in the central part of the peninsula, and [Alukajik](/source/Alukajik), [Ørnen](/source/%C3%98rnen%2C_Greenland), [Tommeltotten](/source/Tommeltotten) and [Trillingerne](/source/Trillingerne_(nunatak)) ('Triplets') in the northeast. The [Brages Range](/source/Brages_Range) is a long nunatak in the western part rising above the Fimbul Glacier, and the [Alfheimbjerg](/source/Alfheimbjerg) rises on the other side of the glacier, off Odinland.<ref name="mapcarta">{{cite web|url=http://mapcarta.com/19188238|title=Odin Land|work=Mapcarta|access-date=18 July 2016}}</ref> The highest point in Odinland is {{convert|1591|m|abbr=on}} high Ensom Majestaet rising in the central part of the peninsula at {{coord|63|48|55|N|41|2|1|W}}.<ref name="GE"/>
