Western Christianity celebration

This article is about the eight-day celebration in Western Christianity. For the octave day (the last of the eight days), see [Second Sunday of Easter](/source/Second_Sunday_of_Easter). For the similar period in Eastern Christianity, see [Bright Week](/source/Bright_Week).

"Easter Week" redirects here. For the week before Easter, see [Holy Week](/source/Holy_Week).

"Easter Thursday" redirects here. For the Thursday before Easter, see [Maundy Thursday](/source/Maundy_Thursday).

The celebration of Easter Monday [Mass](/source/Mass_(liturgy)) by [Evangelical-Lutheran](/source/Lutheranism) priests at [Kungsholm Church](/source/Kungsholm_Church), part of the [Diocese of Stockholm](/source/Diocese_of_Stockholm_(Church_of_Sweden)) in the [Church of Sweden](/source/Church_of_Sweden).

The **Octave of Easter** is the eight-day period, or [octave](/source/Octave_(liturgy)), that begins on [Easter Sunday](/source/Easter_Sunday) and ends with [Second Sunday of Easter](/source/Second_Sunday_of_Easter).[1] It marks the beginning of [Eastertide](/source/Eastertide). The first seven of these eight days are also collectively known as **Easter Week**.

## Liturgical celebration

### Roman Rite

In the [Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite](/source/Ordinary_Form_of_the_Roman_Rite), Easter is one of two [solemnities](/source/Solemnity) with [octaves](/source/Octave_(liturgy)); the other is [Christmas](/source/Christmas). The days of the octave are given the second-highest rank in the calendar (second only to the [Paschal Triduum](/source/Paschal_Triduum) and Easter itself), ranking even above normal [solemnities](/source/Solemnity).[2] The paschal [sequence](/source/Sequence_(musical_form)) *[Victimae paschali laudes](/source/Victimae_paschali_laudes)* may be sung before the gospel reading on each of these days.

The Gospel readings for each of middle days within the octave are taken from the various Scriptural accounts of the [Resurrection of Jesus](/source/Resurrection_of_Jesus).

### Lutheran

The Octave of Easter is celebrated with daily [Mass](/source/Mass_(liturgy)#Lutheranism). *The [Lutheran Missal](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lutheran_Missal&action=edit&redlink=1)* states:[3]

The Octave of Easter forms a cohesive thematic unit with the two following weeks. The Gospel for [Quasimodogeniti](/source/Quasimodogeniti), the First Sunday after Easter, recounts the appearance of Our Lord to the apostles in the locked upper room, together with [Thomas’ confession](/source/Doubting_Thomas).[3]
