# Octave Gengou

**Octave Gengou** (27 February 1875, [Ouffet](/source/Ouffet) – 25 April 1957, [Brussels](/source/Brussels)) was a Belgian [bacteriologist](/source/Bacteriologist). He researched with [Jules Bordet](/source/Jules_Bordet) the *[Bordetella pertussis](/source/Bordetella)* bacteria.

## Biography

At the age of 22, he obtained his doctorate at the [University of Liège](/source/University_of_Li%C3%A8ge), later being named as deputy director at the [Pasteur Institute](/source/Pasteur_Institute) of [Brabant](/source/Brabant_(province)). In 1945, he became professor emeritus at the [University of Brussels](/source/Free_University_of_Brussels_(1834%E2%80%931969)).[1]

Gengou worked at the Belgium [Pasteur Institute](/source/Pasteur_Institute) in [Brussels](/source/Brussels). With [Jules Bordet](/source/Jules_Bordet) he isolated *Bordetella pertussis* in pure culture in 1906 and declared it as the cause of [whooping cough](/source/Pertussis).[2] In 1912, he developed the first [whooping cough](/source/Pertussis)-[vaccine](/source/Vaccine). He also worked on various important fundamental research on a now common test for diseases (e.g. the "[Wassermann test](/source/Wassermann_test)" of [August von Wassermann](/source/August_von_Wassermann)).

He served as secretary general of the *Oeuvre Nationale Belge contre la Tuberculose* and as an honorary president of the *Ligue nationale belge contre la Tuberculose*.[1]
