# Obrestad

**Obrestad**[1] is a very small farming village in [Hå Municipality](/source/H%C3%A5_Municipality) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The village is located in the district of [Jæren](/source/J%C3%A6ren) on the shore of the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea), about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) west of the larger village of [Nærbø](/source/N%C3%A6rb%C3%B8).

A [harbour](/source/Harbour) was constructed in Obrestad in 1874 and it is still in use. The [Obrestad Lighthouse](/source/Obrestad_Lighthouse) was built in 1873, about 900 metres (3,000 ft) northwest of the harbour.[2]

A [sea rescue station](/source/Search_and_rescue) for seafarers was established at Obrestad in 1854. It was in use until 1977.

## History

Local landowner [Eirik Bjodaskalle](/source/Eirik_Bjodaskalle), who lived around 950 AD, is said to have had his large farm at Obrestad. Eirik Bjodaskalle was the father of [Queen Astrid](/source/Astrid_Eiriksdottir), the mother of the famous Viking King [Olaf Tryggvason](/source/Olaf_Tryggvason). [Snorri Sturluson](/source/Snorri_Sturluson) chronicles this in the Saga of King Olaf Tryggvason which is part of [Heimskringla](/source/Heimskringla). Obrestad was the place where Astrid and Olaf had to seek refuge before heading east.
