'''Nzari''' (often spelled Zary, Zarry, Zerri) was a small kingdom located on the north bank of the [Congo River](/source/Congo_River). It is mentioned in [Dutch](/source/Dutch_people) sources of the seventeenth century in particular. It is not clear from these sources whether the territory was independent or a part of another political entity, such as [Loango](/source/Kingdom_of_Loango). It was not found in the titles of the kings of Kongo, for example, [Afonso I](/source/Afonso_I_of_Kongo) of [Kongo](/source/Kingdom_of_Kongo)'s list of titles in his letter to the [Pope](/source/Pope) of 1535.<ref>Afonso I to Pope, 1535 in António Brásio, ed. ''Monumenta Missionaria Africana'' 1st series, 15 volumes (Lisbon, 1952-88) 2: 38.</ref>

According to the Dutch geographer, [Olfert Dapper](/source/Olfert_Dapper), Nzari was the root of the Kingdom of Loango.<ref>Olifert Dapper, ''Naukeurige Beschrijving der Africa gewesten'' (Amsterdam: Moers, 1668), p. 514.</ref>
