'''''Nymphoides''''', or '''floatingheart''',<ref>{{PLANTS|id=NYMPH2|taxon=Nymphoides|accessdate=21 July 2015}}</ref> is a [genus](/source/genus) of aquatic [flowering plant](/source/flowering_plant)s in the family [Menyanthaceae](/source/Menyanthaceae). The genus name refers to their resemblance to the water lily ''[Nymphaea](/source/Nymphaea)''. ''Nymphoides'' are aquatic plants with submerged roots and floating [leaves](/source/Leaf) that hold the small [flower](/source/flower)s above the water surface. [Flower](/source/Flower)s are [sympetalous](/source/sympetalous), most often divided into five lobes (petals). The petals are either yellow or white and may be adorned with lateral wings or covered in small hairs. The [inflorescence](/source/inflorescence) consists of either an [umbel](/source/umbel)late cluster of flowers or a lax [raceme](/source/raceme), with [internode](/source/internode_(botany))s occurring between generally paired flowers.

Species of ''Nymphoides'' are sold as aquarium plants, including the "banana plant", ''[N. aquatica](/source/Nymphoides_aquatica)'' and the "water snowflake", ''[N. indica](/source/Nymphoides_indica)''. Species native to the United States are ''[N. cordata](/source/Nymphoides_cordata)'' in the northeast and ''[N. aquatica](/source/Nymphoides_aquatica)'' in the southeast. ''[Nymphoides peltata](/source/Nymphoides_peltata)'' is native to Europe and Asia but can be found in the United States as an [invasive](/source/invasive_species) aquatic weed. The non-native species ''[N. cristata](/source/Nymphoides_cristata)'' and ''[N. indica](/source/Nymphoides_indica)'' also reportedly occur in Florida (Jacono 2000).

''[Nymphoides hydrophylla](/source/Nymphoides_hydrophylla)'''s slim [stems](/source/Plant_stem) (spears) are eaten as a [vegetable](/source/vegetable) in [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan).

Numerous species of ''Nymphoides'' grow in Australia, and others exist in Africa, America, and Asia.
