**November** is the 11th and penultimate [month](/source/Month) of the year in the [Julian](/source/Julian_calendar) and [Gregorian calendars](/source/Gregorian_calendar). Its length is 30 [days](/source/Day). November was [the ninth month](/source/November_(Roman_month)) of the [calendar of Romulus](/source/Roman_calendar#Legendary_10-month_calendar) c. 750 BC. November retained its name (from the Latin *novem* meaning "nine") when [January](/source/January) and [February](/source/February) were added to the [Roman calendar](/source/Roman_calendar). November is a month of late [spring](/source/Spring_(season)) in the [Southern Hemisphere](/source/Southern_Hemisphere) and late [autumn](/source/Autumn) in the [Northern Hemisphere](/source/Northern_Hemisphere). Therefore, November in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of [May](/source/May) in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa. In [Ancient Rome](/source/Ancient_Rome), [Ludi Plebeii](/source/Ludi_Plebeii) was held from November 4–17, [Epulum Jovis](/source/Epulum_Jovis) was held on November 13 and [Brumalia](/source/Brumalia) celebrations began on November 24. These dates do not correspond to the modern Gregorian calendar.

November was referred to as [Blōtmōnaþ](/source/Bl%C5%8Dtm%C5%8Dna%C3%BE) by the [Anglo-Saxons](/source/Anglo-Saxons). [Brumaire](/source/Brumaire) and [Frimaire](/source/Frimaire) were the months on which November fell in the [French Republican calendar](/source/French_Republican_calendar).

In recent decades, the number of warm temperature records in November has outpaced cold temperature records over a growing portion of Earth's surface.[1]

The [Orionids](/source/Orionids), which occurs in late October, sometimes lasts into November.
