***Not Me!*** ([French](/source/French_language): ***Sous-sol***) is a Canadian [drama film](/source/Drama_film), released in 1996.[1] The full-length directorial debut of [Pierre Gang](/source/Pierre_Gang),[1] the screenplay had been written by Gang a full 10 years before he was able to make the film.[2] The film was selected as the Canadian entry for the [Best Foreign Language Film](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film) at the [69th Academy Awards](/source/69th_Academy_Awards), but was not accepted as a nominee.

## Plot

It stars Richard Moffatt as René, an 11-year-old boy coming of age in 1967.[3] When his father dies shortly after he accidentally witnesses his parents having sex, he becomes overly protective of his widowed mother Reine ([Louise Portal](/source/Louise_Portal)) when she enters a new relationship with Roch (Patrice Godin), while simultaneously having his own sexual awakening when the attractive Françoise ([Isabelle Pasco](/source/Isabelle_Pasco)) moves into a neighbouring apartment.[3]

## Release

The film premiered at the [Cannes Film Festival](/source/Cannes_Film_Festival) in 1996,[2] before opening commercially in [Quebec](/source/Quebec) on May 31.[2]

## Awards and nominations

The film garnered two [Genie Award](/source/Genie_Award) nominations at the [17th Genie Awards](/source/17th_Genie_Awards) in 1996, in the categories of [Best Original Screenplay](/source/Academy_of_Canadian_Cinema_and_Television_Award_for_Best_Screenplay) (Gang) and [Best Actress](/source/Canadian_Screen_Award_for_Best_Actress) (Portal).[4] It won the award for Best Original Screenplay.[5] Portal won the 1996 [Prix Guy-L'Écuyer](/source/Prix_Guy-L'%C3%89cuyer) for *Not Me!*.**[6]**

The film was Canada's submission for the [Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film) at the [69th Academy Awards](/source/69th_Academy_Awards) in 1997,[7] but did not make the final shortlist.[8][9]
