==Life and career==
Norton Chase was the son of Nelson H. Chase. He graduated from [The Albany Academy](/source/The_Albany_Academy) in 1878 and attended [Yale College](/source/Yale_College). Chase was Assistant Corporation Counsel of the City of Albany for two years.<ref name="auto"/> A Democrat, he served in the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly) (Albany Co., 3rd D.) in [1886](/source/109th_New_York_State_Legislature).<ref name="auto"/><ref name="auto1">{{cite web|url=https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1895/10/13/102477182.pdf |title=Norton Chase's Career |work=The New York Times |date=October 13, 1895}}</ref> On June 22, 1887, he married Mabel Louise James.<ref name="auto1"/>

Chase ran for [New York State Senate](/source/New_York_State_Senate) in 1887, but was defeated by Republican Henry Russell by an eight-vote margin.<ref name="auto1"/> He ran again in 1889 and prevailed. Chase was a member of the [New York State Senate](/source/New_York_State_Senate) (17th D.) in [1890](/source/113th_New_York_State_Legislature) and [1891](/source/114th_New_York_State_Legislature).<ref name="auto1"/>

In the [New York state election, 1895](/source/New_York_state_election%2C_1895), Chase ran on the Democratic ticket for [New York Attorney General](/source/New_York_Attorney_General), but was defeated by the incumbent Republican [Theodore E.
