**Northern Queen** (foaled 1962 in [Ontario](/source/Ontario)) was a Canadian [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing).

## Background

Northern Queen was a bay mare bred by [E. P. Taylor](/source/E._P._Taylor) and raced by his [Windfields Farm](/source/Windfields_Farm), she was a daughter of [Nearctic](/source/Nearctic_(horse)), sire of [Northern Dancer](/source/Northern_Dancer). Her dam was [Victoriana](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Victoriana_(horse)&action=edit&redlink=1), a top producing [mare](/source/Mare) who was a daughter of [Windfields](/source/Windfields). She was trained from a base at [Woodbine Racetrack](/source/Woodbine_Racetrack) in [Toronto](/source/Toronto) by [Tom Fleming](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tom_Fleming_(horseman)&action=edit&redlink=1),

## Racing record

Among her starts at age two Northern Queen won the [Shady Well Stakes](/source/Shady_Well_Stakes) and notably ran third against males in the [Coronation Futurity](/source/Coronation_Futurity). At age three in 1965, her race conditioning was taken over by future [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) trainer, [Horatio Luro](/source/Horatio_Luro). For Luro, Northern Queen won Canada's most important race for three-year-old fillies, the [Canadian Oaks](/source/Woodbine_Oaks). Although she competed with limited success against top fillies at tracks in [New York State](/source/New_York_(state)), Northern Queen still earned Canadian champion filly honours.

## Breeding record

Although Northern Queen was bred to major stallions such as [Ribot](/source/Ribot_(horse)), [Hoist The Flag](/source/Hoist_The_Flag), and twice to [Buckpasser](/source/Buckpasser), none of her foals met with much success in racing.
