The **North Para River** is a river located in the [Barossa Valley](/source/Barossa_Valley) of the Australian state of [South Australia](/source/South_Australia).

The river's name is based directly on the [Kaurna](/source/Kaurna_language) word *pari* which means river.[2] The "north" descriptor distinguishes it from the [South Para River](/source/South_Para_River) with which it merges.

## Course and features

The North Para River rises in the [Barossa Ranges](/source/Barossa_Ranges) near [Eden Valley](/source/Eden_Valley%2C_South_Australia) and follows a meandering path through the [Barossa Valley](/source/Barossa_Valley), firstly north to the east of [Angaston](/source/Angaston%2C_South_Australia), then arcs around to the [southwest](/source/Ordinal_directions) to pass through the towns of [Nuriootpa](/source/Nuriootpa%2C_South_Australia) and [Tanunda](/source/Tanunda%2C_South_Australia), before merging with the [South Para River](/source/South_Para_River) in [Gawler](/source/Gawler%2C_South_Australia) forming the [Gawler River](/source/Gawler_River_(South_Australia)). The river descends 351 metres (1,152 ft) over its 79-kilometre (49 mi) [course](/source/Watercourse).[1]

The North Para River catchment is one of the key [watersheds](/source/Drainage_basin) in the northern [Mount Lofty Ranges](/source/Mount_Lofty_Ranges). It plays a very important role in the economy of South Australia, providing much of the water used by [viticulture](/source/Viticulture) in the [Barossa Valley](/source/Barossa_Valley). Its waters are also used for [livestock production](/source/Livestock), [cereal cropping](/source/Cereal) and recreation.
