'''North Georgia''' is the northern [hill](/source/hill)y/[mountain](/source/mountain)ous region in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)). At the time of the arrival of [settler](/source/settler)s from [Europe](/source/Europe), it was inhabited largely by the [Cherokee](/source/Cherokee). The counties of north Georgia were often scenes of important events in the [history of Georgia](/source/History_of_Georgia_(U.S._state)). It was the site of many [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) battles, including the [Battle of Lookout Mountain](/source/Battle_of_Lookout_Mountain) and the [Battle of Chickamauga](/source/Battle_of_Chickamauga), leading up to the [Atlanta campaign](/source/Atlanta_campaign). Today, particularly in the northeast portion of the region, [tourism](/source/tourism) sustains the local economy.

==Geography==
North Georgia encompasses the [north Georgia mountains](/source/north_Georgia_mountains) (far northeast and northwest) region of the state and the [Atlanta metropolitan area](/source/Atlanta_metropolitan_area), although the term is often used to describe only the region north of the metro area, especially in [newscast](/source/newscast)s from the Atlanta [media market](/source/media_market) (which reach nearly all of the northern third of the state). To the south lies [central Georgia](/source/central_Georgia), with [upstate South Carolina](/source/upstate_South_Carolina) to the east, [western North Carolina](/source/western_North_Carolina) to the northeast, [East Tennessee](/source/East_Tennessee) to the north, and [northeast Alabama](/source/northeast_Alabama) to the west. Part of metropolitan [Chattanooga](/source/Chattanooga) extends into the far northwestern section of Georgia from [Tennessee](/source/Tennessee), while most of the rest of the region is tied to Atlanta-area [mass media](/source/mass_media).

The highest of Georgia's [Appalachian Mountains](/source/Appalachian_Mountains) are near the [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) border, including [Brasstown Bald](/source/Brasstown_Bald), the highest point in the state. The northwest contains part of the [eastern Tennessee seismic zone](/source/eastern_Tennessee_seismic_zone), and small [earthquake](/source/earthquake)s have been felt as far away as [Atlanta](/source/Atlanta). The [foothills](/source/foothills) gradually flatten out toward the south. Much of metro Atlanta is hilly as well, especially on the north and west.

Were it not for a 19th-century [surveying](/source/surveying) error that failed to place the state's northern border at exactly 35°N, it would also touch the [Tennessee River](/source/Tennessee_River).

==Climate==
Throughout North Georgia, average temperatures can change drastically at elevations of {{convert|700|feet|m|-1}} or more above sea level. At these elevations the average summer (from May 31 to September 30) temperature is about {{convert|80|F|C|1|disp=or}} during the afternoon and around {{convert|67|F|C|1|disp=or}} during the morning. Daytime in summer can be hot, often stormy, and humid, whilst nights can be rainy and humid, rarely with temperatures below {{convert|65|F|C|1|disp=or}}. The average winter temperature (from December 1 to March 1) is about {{convert|39|F|C|1|disp=or}} during the afternoon and around {{convert|24|F|C|1|disp=or}} during the morning. Daytime in winter can be humid, windy, and cold, while nights can be frigid and humid. Snow can fall annually anywhere above {{convert|800|to|900|ft|m|-1}}, with a large blizzard typically happening every couple of years and more typically {{convert|1|to|5|in|m|sigfig=2}} annually.
