**Norman William Reynolds** (26 March 1934 – 2 April 2023)[1] was a British [production designer](/source/Production_designer) and [art director](/source/Art_director), best known for his work on the [original *Star Wars* trilogy](/source/Star_Wars_original_trilogy) and *[Raiders of the Lost Ark](/source/Raiders_of_the_Lost_Ark)*.

## Early life and education

Reynolds was born in [Willesden](/source/Willesden), London on 26 March 1934,[2][3] Reynolds went to art college.[4]

## Career

Reynolds was working for a manufacturer of illuminated signs when he was commissioned to create signs for the 1962 film *[The Road to Hong Kong](/source/The_Road_to_Hong_Kong)* and decided to apply for jobs in film design. He started work at [Elstree Studios](/source/Elstree_Studios) in 1963 as a designer on *[Come Fly with Me](/source/Come_Fly_with_Me_(film))*, then worked on the TV series *[The Saint](/source/The_Saint_(TV_series))* and on 1965's *[Thunderball](/source/Thunderball_(film))*. Subsequent work included *[Battle of Britain](/source/Battle_of_Britain_(film))* (1969; uncredited) and as assistant art director on *[Phase IV](/source/Phase_IV_(1974_film))* (1974).[4]

Reynolds did his best known work on the first three *Star Wars* films,[4][5] as art director on 1977's *[Star Wars](/source/Star_Wars%3A_A_New_Hope)* and after the death of [John Barry](/source/John_Barry_(set_designer)) as production designer on the sequels, *[The Empire Strikes Back](/source/The_Empire_Strikes_Back)* and *[Return of the Jedi](/source/Return_of_the_Jedi)*,[2] and on 1981's *Raiders of the Lost Ark*, for which he won his second [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Award) and a [BAFTA Award](/source/BAFTA_Award).[4][2] He was subsequently art director on the 1978 film *[Superman](/source/Superman_(1978_film))* and its 1980 sequel *[Superman II](/source/Superman_II)*, and production designer on *[Return to Oz](/source/Return_to_Oz)* and *[Young Sherlock Holmes](/source/Young_Sherlock_Holmes)* (both 1985) and *[Empire of the Sun](/source/Empire_of_the_Sun_(film))* (1987). He also worked on *[Alien 3](/source/Alien_3)* (1992) and *[Mission Impossible](/source/Mission%3A_Impossible_(film))* (1996).[4]

Reynolds directed two episodes of the 1980s TV series *[Amazing Stories](/source/Amazing_Stories_(1985_TV_series))*, "The Pumpkin Competition" and "Gather Ye Acorns".[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] He was [special effects director](/source/Special_effects_director) for *[The Exorcist III](/source/The_Exorcist_III)* (1990) and [second unit director](/source/Second_unit_director) for *[Alive](/source/Alive_(1993_film))* (1993).[2]

## Personal life and death

Reynolds and his wife, Ann, have three daughters and lived in [Cheltenham](/source/Cheltenham).[2] He often concealed his work, saying that he worked in a biscuit factory.[4] Reynolds died on 2 April 2023 at the age of 89.[2][4][6]
