At [Walterboro High School](/source/Colleton_County_High_School) in [Walterboro](/source/Walterboro%2C_South_Carolina), [South Carolina](/source/South_Carolina), Hand earned three [letters](/source/Letterman_(sports)) in [football](/source/High_school_football), and also played [baseball](/source/baseball). As a senior, he was an honorable mention [All-America](/source/All-America) selection by ''[Parade](/source/Parade_(magazine))'' and ''[USA Today](/source/USA_Today)'', and was the South Carolina High School Defensive Lineman of the Year. As a junior [tight end](/source/tight_end), he caught 25 passes for 526 yards (21.04 yards per reception average).

At [Itawamba Junior College](/source/Itawamba_Junior_College) in Mississippi, he finished his two-year career with 18 sacks, 135 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.
Hand was a two-year [starter](/source/Starting_lineup) at the [University of Mississippi](/source/University_of_Mississippi) after transferring from Itawamba Junior College.
