**Norman Criddle**, born in 1875 in [Addlestone](/source/Addlestone), Surrey, England, died in 1933 in [Winnipeg](/source/Winnipeg), Manitoba, Canada, was an [entomologist](/source/Entomologist) active in the early development of control strategies for [agriculturally](/source/Agriculture) important [grasshoppers](/source/Grasshopper) (Insecta: [Orthoptera](/source/Orthoptera)) in the [prairie](/source/Prairie) [croplands](/source/Croplands) of [western North America](/source/Western_North_America), as well as a [naturalist](/source/Naturalist)-artist.[1][2]

## Career

In 1902, faced with [food crop](/source/Food_crop) devastation from a peak in the population of grasshoppers, Criddle developed a mixture of [pesticidal](/source/Pesticide) [toxins](/source/Toxins) called the "Criddle Mixture" to combat them, and was hired by the [provincial](/source/Province) government to demonstrate its use to farmers.[3] In 1913 the Manitoba government hired him as an entomological field officer, and in 1919 he was appointed the provincial entomologist.[4] Gifted with considerable artistic ability, Criddle illustrated a number of agricultural books; his and Dr. [James Fletcher](/source/James_Fletcher_(entomologist))'s *Fodder and Pasture Plants* and *Farm Weeds of Canada* are especially noteworthy.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Education & Honors

Criddle was awarded an [honorary diploma](/source/Honorary_degree) from the [Manitoba Agricultural College](/source/University_of_Manitoba), was [honorary president](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Honorary_president&action=edit&redlink=1) of the [Natural History Society of Manitoba](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Natural_History_Society_of_Manitoba&action=edit&redlink=1) from 1925 to 1933, and a member of the [Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Manitoba_Agricultural_Hall_of_Fame&action=edit&redlink=1).[5] His family's homestead in Aweme, Manitoba, the [Criddle/Vane Homestead](/source/Criddle%2FVane_Homestead_Provincial_Park), has been declared a Manitoba Provincial Heritage Park.[6]

Criddle authored and illustrated a number of works between 1906 and 1934.[7]
