Most often used route to climb a mountain

Although a serious [alpine climbing](/source/Alpine_climbing) route in its own right, the Hörnli ridge (1,220 m, [AD](/source/Grade_(climbing)#IFAS) [III](/source/Grade_(climbing)#UIAA)) of the [Matterhorn](/source/Matterhorn) is the "voie normale" that most climbers use to reach the summit.[1]

A **normal route** or **normal way** ([French](/source/French_language): *voie normale*; [German](/source/German_language): *Normalweg*) is the most frequently used [climbing route](/source/Climbing_route) for ascending and descending a given [mountain peak](/source/Mountain_peak); it is usually the easiest route (though not necessarily easy, *per se*) and is often the most straightforward one‍—‍‌an example is the [Goûter Route](/source/Go%C3%BBter_Route) on [Mont Blanc](/source/Mont_Blanc).[2][3] Other generic names include the *tourist route* or *trade route*, and some climbing routes have specific 'normal route' names such as the "Yak Route" on Mount Everest.[4]
