# Norma Smith

**Norma Ruth Smith** (née **Creighton**; born October 8, 1951) is an American [politician](/source/Politician) of the [Republican Party](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)). She was a member of the [Washington House of Representatives](/source/Washington_House_of_Representatives), representing the [10th Legislative District](/source/Washington's_10th_legislative_district) from 2008 to 2021.[1]

## Education

In 1971, Smith earned an A.A. degree from [Pensacola Junior College](/source/Pensacola_State_College). In 2000, Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in [theology](/source/Theology) from Puget Sound Christian College.[2][3]

## Career

Smith was an aide to Republican [U.S. Representative](/source/United_States_House_of_Representatives) [Jack Metcalf](/source/Jack_Metcalf_(politician)) from 1994 to 2000,[4] and was a member of the [South Whidbey School Board](/source/South_Whidbey_School_District) from 1991 to 1995, serving as president in 1994.[2] She unsuccessfully ran against Democratic [State Senator](/source/Washington_State_Senate) [Mary Margaret Haugen](/source/Mary_Margaret_Haugen) in 2000[4] and Democratic U.S. Representative [Rick Larsen](/source/Rick_Larsen) in 2002.[5] Smith was appointed to the state House in 2008 to fill a vacant seat.[1] Her district, the 10th Legislative District, encompasses all of [Island County](/source/Island_County,_Washington), a portion of northwestern [Snohomish County](/source/Snohomish_County,_Washington), and a southwestern portion of [Skagit County](/source/Skagit_County,_Washington).[6] She was subsequently reelected.[1][3] In the state House, Smith obtained a bipartisan reputation and was known as a prominent supporter of [data privacy](/source/Data_privacy) legislation.[1]

Smith announced in March 2020 that she would not seek reelection to a seventh term in office.[6]
