**Norman Johnston Jamison** (May 25, 1950 – October 3, 2017) was a [politician](/source/Politician) in [Ontario](/source/Ontario), Canada. He was a [New Democratic Party](/source/New_Democratic_Party_of_Ontario) member of the [Legislative Assembly of Ontario](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Ontario) from 1990 to 1995. He died on October 3, 2017, of liver cancer at the age of 67.[1]

## Background

Jamison was president of his student council at Memorial Public School, but did not attend university. He was employed by [Stelco](/source/Stelco) for twenty years, and also worked as a representative of the [United Way](/source/United_Way_of_Canada) in [Norfolk County, Ontario](/source/Norfolk_County%2C_Ontario).[2]

## Politics

He ran for the Ontario legislature in the [1987 provincial election](/source/1987_Ontario_general_election), but finished almost 9,000 votes behind the [Liberal](/source/Ontario_Liberal_Party) candidate, [Gord Miller](/source/Gord_Miller_(politician)), in the southwestern Ontario riding of [Norfolk](/source/Norfolk_(electoral_district)).[3]

The NDP won a majority government in the [1990 provincial election](/source/1990_Ontario_general_election), and Jamison was elected over Miller by almost 4,000 votes in a rematch from 1987.[4] He was a [parliamentary assistant](/source/Parliamentary_assistant) to the [Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology](/source/Minister_of_Industry%2C_Trade_and_Technology_(Ontario)) and the [Minister of Economic Development and Trade](/source/Minister_of_Economic_Development_and_Trade_(Ontario)) over the next five years.[5]

The NDP were defeated in the [1995 provincial election](/source/1995_Ontario_general_election), and Jamison finished third against the [Progressive Conservative](/source/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Ontario) [Toby Barrett](/source/Toby_Barrett) in his bid for re-election.[6]

Jamison left the NDP to join the Liberal Party before the [1999 provincial election](/source/1999_Ontario_general_election), and endorsed the Liberal candidate in the redistributed riding of [Haldimand—Norfolk—Brant](/source/Haldimand%E2%80%94Norfolk%E2%80%94Brant).

He ran for municipal councillor in [Haldimand County](/source/Haldimand_County%2C_Ontario) in 2000, but was defeated.[7]
