The town was probably founded around 1100 BC and has been invaded or sacked several times, including by [Saracens](/source/Saracens) in the eighth century.<ref name=nontron/> In the [Hundred Years' War](/source/Hundred_Years'_War), Nontron was besieged several times, sitting on the border between the [Kingdom of England](/source/Kingdom_of_England) and the [Kingdom of France](/source/Kingdom_of_France).<ref name="nontron"/> In 1800, after the [French Revolution](/source/French_Revolution), it became a [subprefecture](/source/subprefecture) of the department of the Dordogne.<ref>[http://splaf.free.fr/24his.html Historique de la Dordogne], SPLAF</ref>
