**Nong Chok** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): หนองจอก, pronounced [\[nɔ̌ːŋ t͡ɕɔ̀ːk\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)) is one of the [50 districts](/source/Districts_of_Bangkok) (*khet*) of [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok), [Thailand](/source/Thailand). It is bounded by other districts (from north clockwise): [Amphoe Lam Luk Ka](/source/Amphoe_Lam_Luk_Ka) of [Pathum Thani province](/source/Pathum_Thani_province), [Amphoe Bang Nam Priao](/source/Amphoe_Bang_Nam_Priao) and [Amphoe Mueang Chachoengsao](/source/Amphoe_Mueang_Chachoengsao) of [Chachoengsao province](/source/Chachoengsao_province), [Lat Krabang](/source/Lat_Krabang), [Min Buri](/source/Min_Buri) and [Khlong Sam Wa](/source/Khlong_Sam_Wa) of [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok). It is the biggest, easternmost and the most sparsely populated district of Bangkok.

## History

The district was established as an [amphoe](/source/Amphoe) in 1897 during the reign of King [Chulalongkorn](/source/Chulalongkorn). The original settlers were [Muslims](/source/Muslim) relocated from southern Thailand. In 1902, it became an amphoe of the newly established [Min Buri province](/source/Min_Buri#History). Due to economic hardship during 1930–31, Min Buri Province was disbanded in 1931 and Nong Chok was transferred to [Chachoengsao province](/source/Chachoengsao_province).

District administration was later moved again to Bangkok in 1932 due to inconvenience of travel between Nong Chok and Chachoengsao. As of 2006[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nong_Chok_district&action=edit), about 75% of the population were Muslims while 22% were Buddhists. The name *Nong Chok* means [water lettuce](/source/Water_lettuce) (*[Pistia](/source/Pistia) stratiotes*) swamp.

## Administration

The district is sub-divided into eight sub-districts (*[khwaeng](/source/Khwaeng)*).

## Economy

Agriculture was and remains the most important part of Nong Chok economy. Rice, vegetables, fruits, and livestocks are the main products. It is famous for its [gamecocks](/source/Gamecock) and [birdcages](/source/Birdcage). Many canals were dug for [irrigation](/source/Irrigation) and [transportation](/source/Transportation).

## Environment

With its rural environment and surrounding agricultural lands, Nong Chok remains the last natural habitat of [flying fox](/source/Flying_fox) colonies in the Bangkok area.[2]

It is said that in the past, when the environment was still pristine, one could see as far as Chachoengsao and even some mountains in the [Bang Pla Soi](/source/Bang_Pla_Soi) area of [Chonburi](/source/Chonburi_province) from Nong Chok.
